PURIFYING THE MASAAJID OF SHIRK, BIDAH AND KHURAAFAAT Sheikh Saaleh al Fawzaan (hafidza-hullaah) said: The Mosques are the Houses of Allaah. They are places prepared for the (performance) of the Prayer, and are the most beloved places to Allaah. They are the houses which Allaah has ordered to be constructed for His Remembrance. These Mosques must be places for worshiping Allaah (Alone), and there should not take place in them anything that is for other than Allaah. Graves and Tombs are not to be built in them; because the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) has cursed those who do so. He has informed (through his statement) that this is from the actions of the Jews and Christians, and he forbade us from that at the end of his life whilst in the stupors of death, saying: 'INDEED THOSE BEFORE YOU USED TO TAKE GRAVES AS MASAAJID (PLACES OF WORSHIP)'. He (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) stated whilst in the course of death- 'INDEED, AND DO NOT TAKE GRAVES AS PLACES OF WORSHIP, FOR I FORBID YOU FROM THAT' And he (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: 'THE CURSE OF ALLAAH BE UPON THE JEWS AND CHRISTIANS, FOR THEY TOOK THE GRAVES OF THEIR PROPHETS AS MASAAJID (PLACES OF WORSHIP) (Reported by Imaam Bukhaari, No: 435, 436) Therefore, the Mosques must be purified from the traces of shirk and the worship of engraved images. They are neither to be built on graves nor are the dead to buried in them after their construction; rather they are to be places in which Allaah is worshiped (Alone), and for the establishment of the Prayer, remembrance of Allaah, recitation of the Qur'aan, for beneficial doroos and devotion in worship. This is the service of the Mosques. As for establishing in them engraved images that are worshipped besides Allaah, then these are not Masaajid. This is testification to Shirk, even if its people call it a mosque; because Allaah said: 'AND THE MASAAJID ARE FOR ALLAAH (ALONE)' 72:18 that is; not for other than Him (subhaanahu-Wata-aalaa). The Mosques are places in which the people gather and meet one another, so they must be manifestly in opposition to Shirk, Bidah and Khuraafaat (corruption/disorder/fictitious things); because the people obtain instructions of knowledge and acts of worship in them. AND IF THERE IS FOUND IN THEM (I.E. THE MASAAJID) SOMETHING OF SHIRK AND KHURAAFAAT, IT WILL HAVE AN EFFECT AND IS SPREAD IN THE EARTH. THEREFORE, THE MOSQUES MUST BE PURIFIED FROM SHIRK, AND THE GREATEST OF THEM IS THE MASJID AL HARAAM, AS ALLAAH HAS COMMANDED THAT IT BE PURIFIED. HE (TA-AALAA) SAID: 'And (remember) when We showed Ibraaheem the site of the (sacred) House (the Kabah at makkah) (saying): Associate not anything (in worship) with Me, [Laa-ilaaha-illal-laah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah)-Islaamic Monotheism], and sanctify My House for those who stand up (for prayer), and those who bow (submit themselves with humility and obedience to Allaah), and make prostration (in prayer)' 22:26 WHAT IS IT TO BE PURIFIED FROM? IT IS TO BE PURIFIED FROM SHIRK, BIDAH AND KHURAAFAAT, JUST AS IT IS TO BE PURIFIED FROM IMPURITIES AND GARBAGE. Sharh Al-Usoolus Thalatha of Sheikh Fawzaa, Page: 44-45
