Would you be so kind as to explain in relative detail the ayah 57 Hadid: 27 which I have heard people use as a justification for bidıah hasana ı that the monasticism they invented was good ı only those that didnıt observe it correctly were blamed but the ones that did observe it correctly were described as believers given their ıdue rewardı - or so they say. |
| Rather it seems that Allaah was blaming them for two things - 1) They legislated things for themselves that Allaah did not legislate 2) And then they did not even fulfill what they themselves invented to seek Allaah's Pleasure This is what as-Sa'dee mentions in his tafseer (p.843). After knowing that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) warned his followers continuously of innovation in the religion, saying to them regularly, "...and every religious innovation is a straying, and every straying is in the fire..." and he included this warning in his farewell admonishment, as found in the hadeeth of Irbaadh ibn Saariyah - How could someone use such an angle to say there are good religious innovations?! Aren't the prohibitions of religious innovation crystal clear? And aren't the proofs that some people try to come with entirely confusing and speculative? Allaah has described the people who follow after unclear verses, leaving the clarity of clear rulings in Islaam, as people with deviation in their hearts who seek fitnah and the perversion of the religion! See the seventh verse of al-Maa'idah (3:7). May Allaah protect us. And just for argument's sake, if it were possible to understand the verse as a praise of religious innovation done by the people of previous revelations, then we have a principle that would not allow this to make way for religious innovation as followers of Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) - That the legislations of the previous prophets are to be followed in general, so long as they do not go against the teachings of the final revelation given to Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), and such an allowance would clearly and blatantly contradict the teachings of Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam). However, it seems much more obvious that Allaah is not praising the Christians for their religious innovation in the first place. And Allaah knows best.

I would appreciate your explanation of how the salaf understood this ayah; the tafsir ibn Kathir I have at hand was not particularly useful in this regard. |
| Actually, Ibn Katheer stated quite clearly, "...This (verse) is a censure of them from two angles: [1] That they innovated into the religion of Allaah that which Allaah did not legislate for them; [2] and that they did not stick to what they assumed would get them near to Allaah, the Mighty and Exalted..."
