Can anyone shed some light on the sunnah regarding the kunya? It seems to me (correct me if I'm wrong), from the texts I have come accross, that kunyas using a male name (e.g. Abu 'Abdullaah) are more common than those using a female name (e.g. Abu 'Aaliyah), so I wondered if some of the salaf would have their son's name for a kunya even when their eldest child was a daughter. And Allaah knows best.

What seems to be correct from the Hadeeth of Abu shuraih which is in abu Daawud and Tirmidhi and you can find it under the chapter of 'Honoring Allaah's names and changing names for that reason' near the end of kitaab Tawheed. In all the explanations it mentions that this is the Sunnah to take the kunya of your eldest, I do remember however Fawzaan saying that it should be the eldest son. And Allaah knows best.

Massahallah, may Allah reward you for pointing out his issue. I also have a question regarding names.
What is said about people naming or calling themselfs Abdi (slave)? This name is common among many muslims, so my question is, can we use the name Abdi without Allah added to, as in Abdillah?

Again I wish to thank you for the Daleel [i.e. the Hadith of Abu Dawud] and statement of Shaikh Fawzan on this matter of the kunya, it has become clear to me as to what you were presenting, Al-Hamdulillah. May Allah, Azza wa Jall, reward immensely.
