Aboo Maalik al-Ash'ari رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

- "Purification is half of Eemaan,
- and 'alhamdulillaah' fills the scales,
- and 'subhaan-Allaah wal-hamdu-li-Llaah' fill what is between the Heaven and the Earth.
- Prayer is light,
- Sadaqat (Charity) is burhaan,
- Sabr (patient perseverance) is diyaa' (ضياء),
- and the Qur'aan is either a proof in favor of you or against you.
- Everyone wakes up as someone who would trade/sell his soul - so either he frees it or he destroys it."

(This translation is partially based on that of brother Abu Iyaad Amjad Rafiq here: "Purification is Half of Eemaan")

[Related by Imaam Muslim رحمه الله  in the Book of Purification - Chapter: Virtue of Wudoo'. Imaam an-Nawawi رحمه الله mentions this narration in his 40 Hadeeth.]

To explain the last sentence of the hadith, "Everyone wakes up as someone who would trade/sell his soul - so either he frees it or he destroys it." the Khateeb mentioned the following verses:

{وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا (7) فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا (8) قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا (9) وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا (10)}

English Interpretation of the Meaning:
(7) By Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul), and Him Who perfected him in proportion;

(8) Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him.

(9) Indeed he succeeds who purifies his own self (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds).

(10) And indeed he fails who corrupts his own self (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered, by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds).

May Allah make us of those who are successful.
