Smoking involves harming oneself since it is proven beyond doubt it is bad for health and causes cancer. It also involves harming others - passive smoking and also bad odor emitting from the mouth of the smoker. It involves wastage of money too. You can get additional info from the various fataawa of the Ulemah inshAllaah.

Wa alaykumussalaam, The US Department of Health and Human Services published a report in 2006 on the "The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke" The Executive Summary of the report is available in pdf form at the link: http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/secondhandsmoke/report/executivesummary.pdf If you look starting on page 9, there is a summarized listing of the terrible effects of secondhand smoke.

As-Salaamu AlaiKum, Jazakallah khair for the replies, but i am not looking for this type of information. What i was looking for was the islaamic point of view on it (i know that there is one because i have read it in the past but i cant remember in which book exactly) ý if anyone has the fatwa, or knows where to find it, in english? I think it was a fatwa by Shaykh Ibraaheem Aal Ash-Shaikh (rahimahullah) who mentioned at least 4 (four) different ways of consuming intoxicants and narcotics... from these is inhaling through the mouth... and there is also injecting into the body... and there was something do with mixing with water (like She'sha) and then consuming (i cant remember the exact words)... and the fourth is (i cant remember the fourth)... All of these ways (and others) have been used in the past and they are all haraam in islaam. And then the Shaykh bought evidence for these four types. And then there was also some more fatawa by some other mushaykh. This were in a book i read in the past... i think it was this book (but i cant be sure) http://www.salafibookstore.com/sbs/index.cfm?scn=books&ProductID=B407&do=detail&book= If anyone knows about the fatwa exactly, or knows where to find it, in english? Its been a while and i have forgot.

wa'alaikum'assalam brother, Below is the fatwa by the lajnah da'imah (permanent committee of scholars in saudi arabia): In view of the harm caused by tobacco, growing, trading in and smoking of tobacco are judged to be haram. The Prophet sallalah'hualai'hiwassalam is reported to have said, "Do not harm yourselves or others". Furthermore, tobacco is unwholesome and God says in the Quran that the Prophet sallalah'hualai'hiwassalam saidd 'enjoins upon them that which is good and pure and forbids them that which is unwholesome'. Permanent Committee of Academic Research and Fatwa, Saudi Arabia Abdul-Aziz bin Baz, Chairman Abdul-Razzaq Afifi, Vice-President Abdullah bin Ghadian, Member Abdullah bin Qa'oud, Member I hope that helps brother. wassalam TextPermanent Committee of Academic Research and Fatwa, Saudi Arabia

Bismillaah Al-Hamdulillaah InshaAllaah, the excerpt below from the linked fatwa specifically answers your question. The ruling on carrying cigarettes to the Masjid Excerpt from above link:
| quote: |
...it is not unknown that cigarettes are from the evil matters and that which is disgusting. Smoking them is forbidden due to what it contains of extreme harm upon the self, the wealth and the society. It is also forbidden due to lack of benefit in it. Since is is disgusting, the houses of Allah (i.e., the Masjids) must be protected from it. Carrying them (cigarettes) to the Masjids is from that which is contradictory to honoring the Houses of Allah and respecting them. Therefore, it is not permissible to do so.... Permanent Committee for Research and Verdicts Fatawa Islamiyah, Vol.3, p.g 41,42, DARUSSALAM |

Here are other items regarding cigarettes The ruling on selling Cigarettes and Drugs and then giving Charity with its Money http://www.salafitalk.net/st/printthread.cfm?Forum=6&Topic=3046 And then there is this beneficial post from five years ago by our dear brother Moosaa Richardson:
| quote: |
Cigarettes have been officially banned and their sales are now prohibited in Makkah and Madeenah. For some time I was worried about some of the teachers' personal ijtihaads about not praying in the masjid when the salaah is established and we hear the athaan. It just so happened that a teacher tried to keep us from praying in the masjid so he could finish his lesson. When I complained to the department, I found that the school had recently passed an accross the board rule (a "ta'meem") that all teachers and their students must leave their classes at the time of the salaah and pray in jamaa'ah. The government just recently jailed an American who makes takfeer and deported an American Ash'aree. I was told that an official ban on the books of Sayyid Qutb is in the works, may Allaah make that a reality. Just to mention a few changes I've seen here, may Allaah increase this place in goodness... We ask Allaah to keep the leaders firm upon the manhaj of the Salaf no matter what pressure is put on them, we ask Allaah to aid them and continue to aid His Deen by way of them. Moosaa Richardson |

Subhanak Allaahuma wa bihamdika ash-hadu anlaa illaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk If I said anything correct, then it is from Allaah (subhanahu wa taa'ala), and if I erred, then that is from me and shaytan.
