Some narration from the Salaf:

Al-Fudayl ibn 'lyaad (d. 187H) said, "I met the best of people, all of them people of the Sunnah and they used to forbid from accompanying the People of Innovation."

Reported by al-Laalikaaýee,

Sufyaan ath-Thawree (d.161 H) said, "Whoever listens to an innovator has left the protection of Allaah, and is entrusted with the innovation."

Reported by Aboo Nu'aym in Al-Hilyah, 7/26 and Ibn Battah, no. 444.

Al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyaad (d. 187H) said, "Whoever sits with a person of innovation, then beware of him and whoever sits with a person of innovation has not been given wisdom. I love that there was a fort of iron between me and a person of innovation. That I eat with a Jew and a Christian is more beloved to me than that I eat with a person of Innovation."

Reported by al-Laalikaa'ee

Al-Layth ibn Sa'd (d. 175H) said, "If I saw a person of desires (i.e. innovations) walking upon the water I would not accept from him." So Imaam ash-Shaafi'ee then said, "He (al-Layth) has fallen short. If I saw him walking in the air I would not accept from him."

Reported by as-Suyooti in Al-Amr bil 'lttibaa wan-Nahee 'anil-lbtidaa. Refer to Chapter Eight: On the Prohibition of Sitting with the People of Innovation, Listening to them, Arguing with them, To Abandon them and those who Associate with them.

Imaam as-Saaboonee (d. 449H) said about Ahlus-Sunnah, "They follow the Salafus-Saalih the Imaams and the Scholars of the Muslims, and they cling to the firm deen that they clung to and to the clear truth. And they hate Ahul-Bid'ah (the People of Innovation) who innovate into the Deen that which is not from it. They do not love them and they do not keep company with them. They do not listen to their sayings, nor sit with them, nor argue with them about the Deen, nor debate with them. Rather, they protect their ears from hearing their futility; things, which if they pass through the ears and settle in the hearts, will cause harm and cause doubts and wicked ideas to appear. And concerning this Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent down: And when you see people engaged in vain discourse about Our Signs, then turn away from them unless they turn to a different theme." Soorah al-An'aam (6):68

Risaalah fil-I'tiqaad Ahlis-Sunnah Ashaabil-Hadeeth, p. 100, of Imaam asSaaboonee.

Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Qaasim related to us, saying:
Ahmad ibn al-Hasan narrated to us saying:
Sulaymaan ibn al-Ash'ath narrated to us, saying:
'Abdullaah ibn Chubbi al-Anteeq narrated to us, saying:
Yaws ibn Asbaat narrated to us, saying: I heard Muhammad ibn an-Nadr al-Haarithee say:

"Whoever listens to a person of innovation - and knows that he is a person of innovation - then protection is taken away from him, and he is left to himself."

al-Imaam al-Haafiz Abul-Qaasim Habatullaah ibn al-Hasan ibn Mansoor at-Tabaree al-Laalikaa'ee (d.418 A.H.) reports in his "Sharh Usool I'tiqaad Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah" - Volume 1 Pages 135-136 No. 252

My advice to everyone on this forum is to stick to such advises from the Salaf and not visit the websites, forums and the places where Bidaah is promoted or defended or even silently approved.

May Allaah reward brother Aboo Khadeejah hafithahullaah for reminding me of the importance of not listening to those who misguide the people with their doubts. May Allaah keep all the Salafees firm upon the Sunnah and prevent us from being arrogant.

Some narrations regarding the topic:

The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said,
"Whoever innovates or accommodates an innovator then upon
him is the curse of Allaah, His Angels and the whole of
mankind."

Reported by Bukhaaree, 12/41 and Muslim, 9/140

Aboo 'Uthmaan as-Saaboonee (d. 449W)
said, "And they avoid the People of Innovation and
Misguidance, having enmity for the People of Desires and
Ignorance. They hate the People of Innovation who introduce
into the Deen that which is not from it. They do not love them,
they do not accompany them, they do not listen to their words,
nor sit with them or argue or dispute with them regarding the
Deen. And they protect their ears from listening to their
falsehoods, which if they pass by the cars and settle in the
hearts, harm the hearts and bring corrupt ideas and
whisperings upon them."

A narration from the salaf:

Al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyaad (d.187H) rahimahullaah said,

"Do not sit with a person of innovation. Allaah has rendered his actions futile and has taken the light of Islaam from his heart." He also said, "Do not feel safe about your deen with a person of innovation. Do not consult him in your affairs and do not sit with him, for whoever sits with a person of innovation Allaah will make him inherit blindness." And he said, "Verily, Allaah has angels who look for the gatherings in which remembrance is made, so look and see with whom is your sitting. Let it not be with a person of innovation for Allaah does not look at them. And a sign of hypocrisy is that a man stands and sits with a person of innovation."

A statement from one of the salaf:

Imaam ash-Shaafi'ee (d.204H) said, "My ruling regarding the people of theological rhetoric is that they should be beaten with palm leaves and shoes and be paraded amongst the kinsfolk and the tribes with it being announced, 'This is the reward of the one who abandons the Book (Qur'aan) and the Sunnah and turns to theological rhetoric (kalaam).'"

Some statements taken from Imaam Ahmad ibn Hanbal rahimahullaah:

Ibnul Jawzee relates from Moosaa Ibn 'Abdullaah at-Tarsoosee who said, "I heard Ahmad Ibn Hanbal saying, 'Do not sit with the people of kalaam, even if they are defending the Sunnah.'" (1)

And Ibn Battah relates from 'Ubaydullaah Ibn Hanbal who said, "My father informed us saying: I heard Abee 'Abdullaah saying, 'Hold firmly to the Sunnah and the hadeeth and Allaah will benefit you with it. And beware of dispute, quarreling and argumentation, since a person who loves kalaam will not succeed. And whoever invents new kalaam, his affair does not end in anything except innovation, because kalaam does not call to goodness. And I do not like kalaam, nor dispute, nor argumentation. So hold firmly to the sunan and the aathaar(narrations) and the fiqh that will benefit you. And leave alone the quarrelling and the kalaam of the people of deviation and argumentation. We know the people and they did not know this, and they stayed away from the people of kalaam. And the end result of kalaam is not good. We seek refuge with Allaah and beware of the fitnah and may we be safe and aware of every form of destruction.'"   (2)

Some narrations from the Salaf:

Imaam Aboo Haatim ar-Raazee(d.264H) (rahimahu Allah) said, "A sign of the people of innovation is their hatred of the people of narrations (Ahlul Athar). A sign of the heretics (zanaadiqah) is that they call the
people of the Sunnah, Hashawiyyah (the Worthless Ones), wanting thereby to nullify the narrations. A sign of the
Jahmiyyah #1 is that they call the people of the Sunnah, Mushabbihah.#2 A sign of the Qadariyyah #3 is that they call the people of narrations Mujbirah #4 .  A sign of the Murji'ah #5 is that they call the people of Mukhaalifah (Opponents) and Nuqsaaniyyah (the Deficient Ones). A sign of the Raafida #6 is that they call the people of the Sunnah, Naasibah #7. However, the people of the Sunnah are not deserving of any name except one and it is absurd to gather them upon these names." #8

The Imaam, the Haafidh - Muhammad Ibn Sinaan al-Waasitee said, "The Mushabbihah are those who go beyond the hadeeth. So as for those who speak with the hadeeth, then they do not increase upon what they hear. So these are the people of the Sunnah. They only believe what the hadeeth comes with, these are the believers. They believe in what the Prophet (Salallaahu alayhi wa salem) came with, and the Book and the Sunnah." #9

References:

1# Jahmiyyah - The followers of jahm Ibn Safwaan, the student of Ja'd Ibn Dirham, both of whom were executed for their apostasy in the time of the younger taabi'een. Amongst their beliefs is that they deny the Attributes of Allaah and declare the Qur'aan to be created.

2# Mushabbihah - Those who declare that Allaah is like His creation and that the Attributes of Allaah are like those of the creation. This was first propagated by Maqaatil Ibn Sulaymaan al-Khurasaanee, during the era of the taabi'een.

3# Qadariyyah - They are also followers of Jahm Ibn Safwaan. This sect was founded by Ma'bad Ibn Juhanee, in Basrah at the end of the era of the Companions. They deny Allaah's Qadar (Divine Pre -Decree) and believe that man creates his own actions, which are free from the Will and Power of Allaah.

4# Mujbirah or Jabariyyah - They hold the belief that people have no free will, and are not responsible for their own actions, rather they are forced.

5# Murji'ah - They uphold the belief of irjaa' (to hold that sins, major or minor, do not effect faith and that eemaan neither increases nor decreases). The first to call to this belief was Gheelaan Ibn Abee Gheelaan al-Qadaree. He was executed in 105H. They claim that actions are not part of faith and that people do not vary in faith and that faith does not increase or decrease.

6# Rawaafid - They are extreme Shee'ah who call themselves Ithnaa Ash'ariyyah (the Twelvers) or Ja'fariyyah. This sect was formed by 'Abdullaah Ibn Saba', a Jew who appeared during the caliphate of 'Uthmaan. He claimed to have love for 'Alee and the Family of the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) . They curse the Companions and declare them to be disbelievers, especially Aboo Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthmaan and the wives of the Prophet. They also believe that the Qur'aan is incomplete.

7# Nawaasib- Those who have hatred towards Alee and the family of the Prophet.

8# Related by Ibnut-Tabaree in as-Sunnah (1/189) and refer to (p. 1 82).

9# Related by Ismaa'eel Ibnul-Fadl in al -Hujjah (32/baa) with an authentic chain of narrators

Shaikh Ubaid al Jaabiree answers a question on whether a salafee student of knowledge who is invited to a masjid of the people of innovation should teach, even if there are no conditions
placed on him.

Question (summarized): What do we do if one from the masaajid of ahlul-bidýah goes to a student of knowledge to request him to give a lecture or classes in their masaajid, with no conditions attached, and (they say) he may teach from any book or topic he wants. Can he go there and give those classes/lessons?

Answer: What is well known regarding the situation of the innovators is (their) playing, plotting and trickery; and as such when a man from ahl as sunnah comes to them they use him as a means to get strength and support and as a means to delude the weak and unintelligent ones- those who do not have fiqh (proper understanding of the religion) from ahl as sunnah ; and from this what I see (regarding this matter) is that you do not go to their masaajid or their gatherings, so long as they have control over the place, and where the authority is theirs; so do not go to them. And if it is a place where the people of the masjid are the 'awwaam (general common folk) and those who prevail over the masjid are the 'awwaam , and these mubtadi'ah don't really have any say or control there, then go to them (the people), and clarify the sunnah in that masjid, and with Allaah is the Tawfeeq...

Refutation upon the People of Innovation

Question:

What do you say concerning the statement of the speaker: Indeed, the refutations upon the people of innovations and deviation were not the habitual practice of the Salaf, and that it is not befitting to spread the books of refutations, except amongst the students of knowledge and that they should not be spread amongst other than them?

Answer:

The refutations upon the people of innovation are from Jihaad in the path of Allaah. They are from safeguarding the Sharee'ah from having other than it attached to it. So writing the books, publishing them and spreading them is the truth and it is a call to the truth and Jihaad in the path of Allaah. So whoever claims that publishing and spreading the books that contain refutation upon the innovators is an innovated affair, then he is upon error, because Allaah the Sublime and Exalted said,
"O Prophet! Strive hard against the hypocrites and be harsh with them." [Sooratut-Tawbah 9:73]

And Jihaad can occur by the hand, or it can be with the tongue, or it can be with the wealth. So from Jihaad with the tongue is defending and safeguarding this Sharee'ah from everything that has been fabricated into it from doubts and falsities. And from that as well is warning against the innovations and calling to the truth. Due to this, Imaam Ahmad (d.241H) and other than him authored books warning against the innovators. So Imaam Ahmad wrote the treatise, ar-Radd 'alaz-Zanaadiqah within which, he clarified their doubts. And he answered every doubt. And al-Bukhaaree (d.256H) - rahimahullaah - wrote his book, Khalq Af'aalul-'Ibaad. And other than them from amongst the Imaams of Islaam wrote books in refutation of the innovators and invalidated their falsities and established the proofs against them. Likewise, Shaykhul-Islaam [Ibn Taymiyyah (d.728H)] wrote in refutation upon the Raafidah in his famous book, Minhaajus-Sunnatin-Nabawiyyah fee Naqd Kalaamish-Shee'ah wal-Qadariyyah. And he clarified what they were upon from falsehood and misguidance.

Warn People Against Deviants

Question:

Is it permissible to mention peoples names and characters when one wants to criticize them and their thinking?

Answer:

If someone writes something that contradicts the pure Shari'ah, and distributes that material, or if he promulgates that view in the media, it becomes compulsory to refute him and expose the falsehood of what he says. There is nothing wrong in mentioning that person's name or in warning people about him if he calls to innovation, shirk, or if he calls people to what Allah has prohibited or to disobedience. Until this day, there are knowledgeable and believing people from the callers to the truth and bearers of the Shari ah fulfilling this obligation, sincerely for Allah Almighty and for the benefit of His servants, rebuking the wrong, inviting to the truth, warning others against those who propagate falsehood and destructive rhetoric.

Some advice from our Salaf:

Imaam al-Awzaa'ee said, "Stick to the example of those who came before you (Salafus Saalih), even if the people reject you. And beware of the opinions of men, even if they beautify it for you with their speech."

Reported by Khateebul Baghdaadee in Sharaf As'haabil Hadeeth (p. 7). Imaam Al Aajurree in Ash Sharee'ah (p. 58).
Ibn 'Abdul Barr in Jaami'ul Ilm Wa Fadhlihi (2/114).
Imaam adh Dhahabee confirmed it in Siyar A'alaamun Nubalaa (7/120). Shaykh Al Albaanee authenticated it in Mukhtasir Al Uloow (p. 138).

When a man knows his ownself, speech of the people is of no benefit to him!

Ruling
On mixing with the various Islamic groups

Question:

Should one mix with these groups or should they be avoided?

Answer:

When the intention behind mixing with them is to call them (to the truth), ý and it is done by those who have knowledge and insight ý to adhere to the Sunnah and to abandon their error(s), then this is something good and is from calling to Allaah. However, if this mixing is only for the purpose of accompaniment and entertainment, without any daýwah and without any clarification [of their errors], then this is not permissible. Hence it is not permissible for a person to mix with the opposers except in a manner in which some Shareeýah benefit can be attained, such as calling them to the correct Islam, clarifying the truth to them that they may return to it ý such as when Ibn Masýood, may Allaah be pleased with him, went to the Innovators who were in the mosque, stood in front of them and rejected their innovation. And like Ibn ýAbbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, who went to the Khawarij, argued with them and refuted their misconceptions and as a result of which some of them returned to the truth.

Therefore, mixing with them in this manner is something that is desirable.   But if they persist upon their falsehood, then it is obligatory to avoid and shun them and to struggle against them for the sake of Allaah.

Statements of the Salaf regarding sitting withAhlul-Bid'ah, listening to their speech, readingtheir books, backbiting them and judging people by their Companionship

Ibn 'Abbaas (radiyallaahu ýanhumaa) said: "Do not sit with the people of
ahwaa', for verily their gatherings cause sickness in the hearts." 1
Hishaam said: al-Hasan [al-Basree] and Muhammad bin Seereen used to
both say: 'Do not sit with the people of ahwaa' and do not argue with
them and do not listen from them." 2
Aboo Qilaabah said: "Do not sit with the people of ahwaa', and do not
argue with them, for verily I do not feel safe that they will immerse you
in their misguidance or confuse you in that which you already know." 3
Ibraaheem an-Nakha'ee said: "Do not sit with the people of ahwaa', for
verily their gatherings cause the light of Eemaan to go from the hearts,
and strip the beauty from the faces, and cause hatred to be inherited in
the hearts of the believers." 4
Ayyoob as-Sakhtiyaanee said: "Aboo Qilaabah said to me: 'O Ayyoob!
Memorize from me four (things): Do not speak regarding the Qur'aan
with your opinion, and beware of (speaking about) al-Qadr, and if the
Companions of Muhammad (Sallallaahu ýalayhi wasallam) are mentioned
then withhold, and do not give the people of ahwaa' your hearing so they
cast into it what they wish." 5

Ahmad bin Abeel-Hawaaree said that 'Abdullaah binul-Busree said to
him: "The Sunnah with us is not that you refute ahlul-ahwaa', but the
Sunnah with us is that you do not speak to anyone from amongst them."
6
Salaam bin Abee Mutee' said: "a man from ahlul-bid'ah said to Ayyoob
[as-Sakhtiyaanee ý d.131H]: 'O Abaa Bakr! Can I ask you about a word?'
[Salaam] said: "So I saw him indicate with his hand and he was saying:
'Not even half a word, not even half a word!'" 7
Muhammad bin Seereen, if he heard speech from a person of bid'ah, he
would put his fingers in his ears, then he said: "if is not halaal for me to
speak to him until he stands up [and leaves] his place." 8
Muslim bin Yasaar said: "Do not open up your hearing to a person of
bid'ah, so he pours inside it what you don't have the ability to take out of
your heart." 9
Sufyaan ath-Thawree [d.161H] said: "Whoever lends his hearing to a

entrusted to himself." 10
al-Imaam As-Saaboonee [d.449H]: "And along with that, they were

keeping them far away, being distant from them and from accompanying
them and living with them, and upon seeking nearness to Allaah

al-Imaam al-Aajurree mentioned in his Akhlaaqul-'Ulamaa': "Because
from the characteristics of the 'Aalim al-'Aaqil is that he doesn't sit with
ahlul-ahwaa', and doesn't debate with themý" 12
Sha'eeb bin Harb said: Ibn 'Awn said: "The one who sits with ahlul-bid'a

Sufyaan bin 'Uyaynah said: "A person of hawaa' in the Deen, there is no

Zaa'idah bin Qudaamah said: "I said to Mansoor binul-Mu'tamar: "If I

Judging people by their companionship:
Muhammad bin Sahm said: I heard 'Ataa' bin Muslim al-Khafaaf
mention from al-A'maash, who said: "They used to not ask about a man
after 3: who he walked with, who he entered upon, and who his friends
were from amongst the people." 22
Muhammad bin Sahm said: I heard Baqiyyah, he said: "Al-Awzaa'ee used
to say: "Whoever hides from us his bid'ah, he cannot conceal from us his
friends." 23
When Sufyaan ath-Thawree entered al-Basrah, so he was asked to look
at the affair of Ar-Rabee bin Sabeeh, so he asked: "What is his
madhhab?"They said: "He has no madhhab except the Sunnah." He said:
"Who are his friends?" They said: "The people of Qadr [the
Qadariyyah]." He said: "(Then) he is qadaree!" 24
Ayyoob as-Sakhtiyaanee [d.131H] was called to wash someone who
died, so he went out with the people, so when the face of the dead person
was uncovered, he knew him. So he said: "See to your companion, for I
will not wash him. I saw him walking with a person of bid'ah." 25
From Aboo Hurayrah (radiyallaahu ýanhu), who said: The Messenger of
Allaah (Sallallaahu ýalayhi wasallam) said: (( The souls are enlisted

amongst them (in the heavens) will be inclined (towards each other
in the world), and those from amongst them that opposed one
another will differ. )) 26
Al-Fudhayl bin 'Iyyaad said: "The souls are enlisted soldiers, so those
that became familiar with one another (from before) will be inclined
(towards each other), and those from amongst them that were opposed

Khuwayl, the brother-in-law of Shu'bah binul-Hajjaaj said: I was with
Yoonus bin 'Uabyd, so a man came and said: "O Aboo 'Abdillaah! You
forbid us from the gathering of 'Amr bin 'Ubayd, and your son has gone
to him?" He (Yoonus) said: "My son?!" He said: "Yes." So Yoonus
became angry. So I didn't leave until his son came, so he said: Yaa
bunay! You knew the opinion of 'Amr bin 'Ubayd, then you enter upon
him?!" So he began to make excuses, so he said: "So and so was with
me." So Yoonus said: "I prohibit zinaa' and stealing and drinking khamr,
but for you to meet Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Taýaala) with that is more
beloved to me than you meet Him with the opinion of 'Amr bin 'Ubayd
and the companions of 'Amr "ý meeting the Qadariyyah. Sa'eed bin
'Aamir said: "We did not see any man who was better than him",
meaning Yoonus (bin 'Ubayd). 28
Al-Imaam al-Barbahaaree: "If anything of bid'ah appears in a person,
beware of him, since what is hidden from you is more than what is
apparent. However, if you see a person whose manners and opinion is
despicable, he is wicked, sinful and oppressive, yet he is a person of the
Sunnah, accompany him and sit with him, since his sin will not harm
you."
Do the innovations have anything from goodness?
Ibn Wahb said that Ibn Mahdee informed him that a man asked
Ibraaheem an-Nakha'ee about al-ahwaa' [i.e. bid'ah], do they have
anything from khayr? So he said: ' Allaah did not make in anything
from it (even the amount equal to) a mustard seed of khayr, and it is
nothing but an adornment from ash-Shaytaan, and the affair is nothing
except the first affair [that which the Prophet (Sallallaahu ýalayhi
wasallam) and his Companions were upon].' 29

The Ruling Upon
The One Who Affiliates Himself
with the
Various Islamic Groups.

Question:

Is the one who affiliates himself with the various (Islamic)
groups to be considered an innovator?

Answer:

This depends upon the nature of the groups. The one who
affiliates himself with those groups that have some opposition to the Book
and the Sunnah is to be considered an innovator.

Taking Knowledge
from
Innovators

Question:

A question from a lecture during the explanation of usool-Sunnah of Imaam Ahmed by Shaykh Rabee': The narration of ibn Sireen and Ayoob as-Sagtiyaani, may Allaah have mercy on them both, that talk about staying away from the people of the bid'ah (innovations) and not listening to them; not even their recitation of the Quran. How should this be applied with the tapes of the people of bid'ah and the hizbees. Do we not listen to them?

Answer:

This warning did not just come from ibn Sireen and Ayoob only. This came from Allaah, his Messenger, the Sahaabah, and those that follow the Imaams of Islaam. The weak ones should not expose themselves to trials and he should distance himself from the people of bid'a.

Q: Is it permissible  to sit with people who indulge in Bid`ahs (innovations in religion) and participate in their lessons?

A: It is not permissible for you to sit with or consider them friends. You have to forbid them from doing such Bid`ahs and warn them against their dangers. May Allah protect us!
