THE ASHAA'IRA(ASH'AREES) ARE NOT FROM AHL-US-SUNNAH WAL JAMA'AAH

The Ashaa'ira (Ash'arees) claim to be followers of Abul-Hasan Al-Ash'aree who himself went through three stages in his belief. He was born in the year 270H and died in the year 330H as Ibn Asaakir concluded. His lineage goes back to the Companion Abu Musa al-Ash'aree.

The First Stage ı The way of the Mu'tazilah, (Ta'teel) denying the Attributes of Allaah due to limited intellect

Abul-Hasan al-Ash'aree was first upon the way of the Mu'tazilah who used to deny the Attributes of Allaah if it opposed their limited intellect. Imam Al-Hafidh Abu Nasr Al-Sijzi (d.444h) in his treatise to the people of Zabeed called 'Rad man Ankara-l-Harf was-Sawt" narrates from Khalf Al-Mu'allim (d.371H) of the Maliki scholars that he said, "Imam Al-Ash'aree was upon the way of I'tizaal (Mu'tazilah) for a period of forty years. Then he repentedı"

The Second Stage ı The way of Ibn Kullab ı (Tahreef) distorting the meaning of the Attributes of Allaah

Then the second stage of Abul Hasan Al-Ash'aree saw him following the path of Ibn Kullaab. This is actually the path of many today who call themselves Ash'arees. If they are true to their claim then they should leave off tahreef which is distorting the meaning of the Attributes of Allaah and follow Abul-Hasan by repenting and return to the way of Ahl-us-Sunnah.

Ibn Taymiyyah said, "Imam Ahmed used to warn against Ibn Kullaab and his followers." ['Dar' Ta'aaradh al-'Aql wan-Naql (2/6)]

Ibn Taymiyyah said, "The Kullaabiyyah are the teachers of the Ashaa'ira for Abul-Hasan Al-Ash'aree followed the example of Abu Muhammad. Ibn Kullaab was closest to the way of the Salaf in terms of the period and in terms of his way. Abu Bakr Ibn Fawrak Sheikh Al-Qushairi gathered the speech of Ibn Kullaab and the Ashaa'ira and showed their agreement in the fundamentals (belief)ı" ['Al-Istiqaama (12/368)]

Ibn Taymiyyah said, "Abul-Hasan came after him (Ibn Kullaab) and he was a student of Abu Ali Al-Jubaai al-Mu'tazili. He then turned away from the statements of the Mu'tazilah and clarified their contradictions in many places and opposed them much in areas of Qadr (pre-destination), Eeman (faith) and wa'd and wa'eed (referring to Allaah's promise of reward or punishing, as either an encouragement or deterrent)ıYet in terms of Allaah's Attributes he followed the path of Ibn Kullaabı" ['Majmu' Fataawa '12/178)]  

Imam Al-Dhahabi quoted Al-Imam Abu Bakr ibn Khuzaima in Seyar 'alam an-Nubalaa (14/380) saying, "Ahmed Ibn Hanbal was amongst the sternest of people in warning against Abdullah ibn Sa'eed ibn Kullaab and his companions such as Al-Harith and others."

Ibn Taymiyyah said, "Many of the later followers of (Abul Hasan) Al-Ash'aree left his statements and went towards the statements of the Mu'tazila, the Jahmiyyah and the philosophers." ['al-Asfahaaniyya (p.107-108')].

The Third stage of Abul Hasan Al-Ash'aree, the way of Ahl-us Sunnah wal Jamaa'ah

The third stage of Abul-Hasan Al-Ash'aree showed that he turned away from distorting the meanings of the lofty Attributes of Allaah which was the way of Ibn Kullaab and he followed the way of the scholars of the Pious Predecessors. Abul-Hasan Al-Ash'aree clearly showed this by writing three books: 'Al-Ibaana', 'Risaala ila Ahli Thagr' and 'Maqaalaat Al-Islamiyeen' clearly affirming the Attributes of Allaah in the manner He affirmed for himself without misinterpretation.

Ibn Dirbas who died in the year 622H wrote a book illustrating clearly that Al-Ibaana of Abul-Hasan al-Ash'aree is actually his book and not as the innovators claim that it is not. They do this because it clearly portrays the correct belief of Ahl-us-Sunnah with regards the Attributes of Allaah.

The scholars continue to refute Abul-Hasan Al-Ash'aree's first and second stage of beliefs so that the Muslims do not follow him in his errors. From them is:

1.    Al-Imam Abu Muhammad Abdullaah ibn Muhammad Al-Andulusi Al-Qahtaani Al-Maaliki (rahimahullaah) from the 4th century.

O Ash'ariya have you come to realise that I am
the dust in your eyes and the itchiness of your eyelids
I am an ulcer in the liver of the Ash'aree
I increase in size until I fight everyone who hates me
I have become apparent and excelled over the heads of your teachers
And have defeated everyone who sought (to defeat) me
And I have turned their arguments upside down and have scattered them
And I found them to be statements without proof
Allaah aided me and has made my proofs firm
And Allaah has saved me from their doubts
...and I have held firmly to the rope of the legislation of Muhammad
And have bitten onto it (the sunnah) with my molar teeth
Have you come to realise O Ash'ariya that I am
A raging storm (against you) and what kind of storm that is?
I am your concern, I am your grief, I am your sickness
I am your poison in secret and in open


2.    Al-Imam Abu Nasr al-Sijzi rahimahullaah from the 5th century

"Ahl-us-Sunnah were trialed after these with a people who claim to be followers (of the Prophet ) and their harm is far greater than the harm of the Mu'tazila and those other than them. They are Abu Muhammad Ibn Kullaab, Abul 'Abbas Al-Qalaanisi and Abul-Hasan Al-Ash'aree (before his repentance)." ['Rad man Ankara-l-Harf was-Sawt' (p.222-223)]

3.    Al-Imam Muhammad ibn Ahmed ibn Khuwaiz Mindaad al-Misri al-Maaliki rahimahullaah

Ibn Abdul-Bar mentioned in his book Jaami' Bayaan al-Ilm wa Fadhlihi (2/92) that he said in his book 'Kitaab ash-Shahadaat' with regards the explanation of Maalik: It is not allowed to take as a witness the innovators and people of desires so Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Ahmed Ibn Khuwaiz Mindaad Al-Misri Al-Maaliki said  

"the people of desires with Maalik and the rest of our companions are the people of rhetoric so every one who philosophises with speech is from the people of desires and innovation whether he be an Ash'aree or something else, his witness is not to be accepted and he is to be boycotted and taught a lesson due to his innovation and if he continues, he is called to repent from it."

4.    Ibn Qudaama rahimahullaah from the 7th century

He said in his book 'Kitaab al-Munaathara fil Qur'an' p.35 that they are innovators: "And we do not know amongst the innovators a group that hides their statements, not bold enough to openly portray them except the zanadiqa (heretics) and Ash'arees."

5.    Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullaah from the 7-8th century

He said in 'Dar' Ta'aarud al-'aql wan-naql' (6/183) "the people of rhetoric from the Ash'arees and othersı"

6.    Al-Imaam ibn Qaiyum rahimahullaah from the 8th century

He quoted Al-Waleed ibn Rushd Al-Maaliki Ibn Waleed's statement in his book 'As-Sawaa'iq al-Mursala' (2/417) and affirmed it without opposing him. His statement was, "if you were to ponder over what was opposed to this legislation in this time of corruption in terms of ta'weel (misinterpretation of Allaah's attributes) it would become clear that these examples are correct. So the first to change this great cure were the Khawaarij then the Mu'tazilah after them. Then it was the Ash'arees then the Sufis and then Abu Hamid (Al-Ghazali) came and flooded the village over."

7.    Sheikh Sulaiman ibn Samhaan rahimahullaah

Sheikh Sulaiman ibn Samhaan says, "how could those who do not affirm Allaah being above the heavens and over His 'Arsh be from Ahl-us-Sunnah? They say 'the letters of the Qur'an are created' and that 'Allaah does not speak with letters or sound' and they 'do not affirm that the believers will see their Lord in paradise with their own eyes.' They affirm the seeing but they explain it to be increase in knowledge that Allaah creates in the heart of the seer. They say that 'belief is just to affirm with the heart' and they make other statements that are known to oppose what Ahl-us-Sunnah wal Jama'aah are upon" [Lawaami' al-Anwaar al-Bahiya (1/73)]

Imaam Abul-'Abbaas ibn Suraij known as 'Ash-Shaafi'ee the Second' and he was a contemporary of al-Ash'aree, said, "We do not speak with ta'weel (interpolation) of the Mu'tazilah, the Ash'ariyyah, the Jahmiyyah, the apostates, the anthropomorphists (Mujassimah and Mushabbihah), the Karraamiyyah and those who declare Allaah to be like His creation (Mukayyifah, those asking about time modality of His Attributes). Rather we accept them (the texts about Allaah's Attributes) without interpretation (ta'weel) and we believe in them without declaring any likeness with the creation (Tamtheel)."[1]

Imaam Abul-Hasan al-Kurjee, one of the Shaafi'ee scholars of the fifth century said, "The Shaafi'ee Imaams have not ceased disdaining and detesting that they should he ascribed to al-Ash'aree and they disassociate themselves from that which al-Ash'aree built his madhhab upon, and they forbid their companions and beloved ones from approaching it, as I have heard from a number of the shaikhs and Imaams." He then gave an example of the shaikh of the Shaafi'ees of his time, Imaam Aboo Haamid al-Isfaareenee, Who was known as 'Ash-Shaafi'ee the Third' saying, "The severity of the Shaikh against the people of theoretical knowledge is well known, to the point that he even made a distinction between the principles of the fiqh of ash-Shaafi'ee and the principles of al-Ash'aree, Notes upon times were added by Aboo Bakr ar-Raadhiqaanee and it is with me. He was followed in this by Shaikh Aboo Ishaaq ash-Sheeraazee in his two books, 'Al-Lumaa' and 'At-Tabsirah.' To the point that if a point of al-Ash'aree agreed with one saying amongst our companions he made distinction and said, "It is the saying of the Ash'ariyyah," and he did not include them amongst the companions of ash-Shaafi'ee. They disdained and avoided them and their madhhab in the principles of fiqh not to mention with regard to the principles of the Religion."[2]

As is known the author of At-Tahaawiyyah and its explainer were both Hanafees, and at-Tahaawee was a contemporary of al-Asharee. He wrote his 'aqeedah to explain the 'aqeedah of Imaam Aboo Haneefah and his companions, and it is very like what is found in Fiqh al-Akbar from him. They report from the Imaam that he clearly states the Kufr (disbelief) of one who says that Allaah, the Most Perfect and Exalted, is not upon the 'Arsh (throne) or remains silent about it. Also his student Aboo Yoosuf declares Bishr al-Maareesee to be a Kaafir, and as is well known the Ash'a'riyyah deny Allaah's ascension and deny that He, the Most High, is above the Throne, and it is also well known that their principles were taken from Bishr al-Maareesee.[3]

The position of the Hanbalees with regard to the Ash'ariyyah is more famous than to need mention. So (ever) since Imaam Ahmad declared 'Ibn Kullaab to be an innovator and ordered him to be ostracized, and he was the true founder of the Ash'aree madhhab, the Hanbalees have not ceased to be involved in a long battle with them. Even to the time of the state of Nizaamnul-Mulk in which they behaved presumptuously, and after it the Hanbalees rejected every speaker who mixed anything from the madhhab of the Ashıariyyah into his speeches. Ibnul-Qushairi was one of those who experienced this, and because their madhhab had become so widespread, and due to the agreement of the scholars of the state, especially the Hanbalees that he should be opposed, so the Khaleefah al-Qaadir sent out Al-I'tiqaad al-Qaadiree which clarified the 'aqeedah which was binding upon the Ummah in the year 433H.[4]

And Shaikhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah quotes that when 'Abdul-Qadir Jeelaanee was asked, "Has there ever been one who was a Walee of Allaah who was upon other than the 'aqeedah of Ahmad ibn Hanbal?" He replied, "That has not occurred and will never occur."[5]

  Shaykh Saalih aal-Shaykh hafidhahullah mentioned Ashairah as one of the sects that has deviated from the way of the Salaf us Salih just like the sects - Murjiah, Qadariyyah, Jahmiyyah, Mutazilah, etc. Further, the Shaykh mentioned some names of the Group that follows the Sunnah and the way of the Salaf us Salih as as-Salaf, Salafiyyah, Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah, Al Jamaah and Ahlul Hadeeth. [1]

Ash-Shaykh Dr. Bakr Aboo Zayd ibn 'Abdullaah (raheemahullaah) said, "It is not allowed for a person to mix between the Mu'tazilah and Islaam, and the Ash'ariyyah and Islaam, and Jahmiyyah and Islaam, and also like this, we say that it is not allowed to say secularist Islaam or democratic Islaam or communist Islaam or other than this, so be aware." [2]

  Imaam Ibn Uthaymeen - may Allaah have mercy upon him - said: "So - for example - the Ash'arees and the Maatooreedees are not considered from Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah in this particular matter (i.e. concerning the Names and Attributes of Allaah). Rather, they oppose what the Prophe (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) and his Companions were upon with regards to accepting the Attributes of Allaah - the Most Perfect - upon their haqeeqah (real meaning). This is why, whoever says that Ahl us-Sunnah are three groups: the Salafees, the Ash'arees and the Maatooreedees - then such a person is indeed mistaken. Rather we say: How can all three be considered Ahl us-Sunnah and they differ with each other? What is there after Truth, except misguidance. How can they all be Ahl us-Sunnah, whilst each one of them refutes the other - this is not possible - except if it is possible to reconcile the opposites. There is no doubt however, that one of them is truly Ahl us-Sunnah - but which one? Is it the Ash'arees, the Maatooreedees or the Salafees? Whichever of them agrees with the Sunnah is considered to be Ahl us-Sunnah, whilst whichever of them opposes it is not. So we say: The Salaf are Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah, and this description cannot be true for anyone else other than them. So how can those who oppose the Sunnah be called Ahl us-Sunnah - this is not possible. How is it possible to say Ahl us-Sunnah are of three differing groups, but we say that they are in agreement? So where is the agreement and concensus? Rather, Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah are those who hold on to what the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) and his Companions were upon, and to the aqeedah of the Salaf - until the Day of Judgement - and they are the Salafees."[1]

  Imaam Ibn Hazm (d.456H) - raheemahullah - said, "The Jahmiyyah and the Ash'ariyyah" - and they are 2 groups that are not to be relied upon...they say that eemaan is tasdeeq (attestation) with the heart only." He also added "And their basis for this is an evil basis that is outside the consensus of the people of al-Islaam." (al-Muhalla 11/411)

Distinguishing the Sunni From The Bid'iyy

Below[1] are excerpts from the book: Juz'un Feehi Imtihaan us-Sunnee Min al-Bid'iyy by Imaam Abul-Faraj Abdul-Wahid bin Muhammad ash-Sheeraazee al-Maqdisi (d. 486H). The author covers a series of aspects of the Islamic 'aqidah and separates the Sunni stance from the bid'iyy stance.

Concerning Imaan:
  • If he says: Imaan is speech, action, intention and agreement with the Sunnah, then he is a Sunni
  • If he says: Belief in the heart he is an Ash'ari
  • If he says: Speech without action, he is a Murji'

Concerning Allaah's Speech:
  • If he says: He spoke with it (i.e. the Qur'an) with letter and voice he is a Sunni
  • If he says: His speech is established with His Dhaat he is an Ash'ari
  • If he says: He brought about the speech (in someone other than Himself) he is a Mu'tazili
Concerning The Qur'an, did Jibreel descend with it to the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) or is it merely an authored expression:
  • If he says: He (Jibreel) descended with the Qur'aan (itself) he is a Sunni
  • If he says: He (Jibreel) descended with his expression (of it in meaning) he is an Ash'ari
Concerning the Creator, is He ascended above the Throne or not:
  • If he says: He is ascended above the Throne without asking how he is a Sunni
  • If he says: No, then he is an Ash'ari Mu'tazili
Concerning the Descent (an-Nuzool):
  • If he says: He descends every night, he is a Sunni
  • If he denies it he is an Ash'ari

Allaamah Abdul Azeez aal-Salmaan said, "...the people of innovation have diseased hearts, and it is feared for the one who mixes with them or calls upon them that he will be affected by what they have from this chronic disease. This is since the sick person contaminates the healthy person, and not the opposite. So beware, beware of all the innovators. From the people of innovation whom we are obligated to distance ourselves from and boycott are: The Jahmees, the Raafidees, the Mu'tazilah, the Matureediyyah, the Khawaarij, the Sufis, the Ash'arees and anyone following their way from the groups that have deviated from the methodology of the Salaf. So the Muslim must beware of them and warn against them.[2]
