As-Salaamu AlaiKum,

I got the following question from Michael, but i didn't want to answer him without knowledge.

quote:

Salam,

I'm very interested in Salafi way of life. I believe that the modest It projects from the Sunnah and Quran makes life easier to serve Allah.

I'm curious though, can a salafi read secular books for educational purposes or Is It discouraged ?

I understand that music is seen as haram and such.

-Michael

I know myself that Secular Books are not allowed as such, and that we shouldn't be looking into them because they dont contain any benificial knowledge (which islaam hasn't already given),
but what would be the best way to answer him with wisdom (is it to mention this to him straight) ?
and are there any exceptions ?

What exactly does he mean by Secular books? Sometimes that word is used to mean books on Science, geography, etc. which is not haraam.

Books having Kufr, Bid'ah, Shirk, lies are not allowed. And Ulemah also tell Muslims to not waste time in books of fiction like novels, etc. You need to ask what exactly is Secular book.

wa 'alaykumus-salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

Everything that is true, being good and beneficial information for individuals and societies, is something we are encouraged to learn.

Everything that is falsehood, being harmful for individuals or societies, is something Muslims stay away from.
