I went to jumu'ah at a hizbi masjid in my hometown where everyone is indo/pak hanafis, maybe 2 arabs, and 2 Salafis(reverts). When they lined up they left a space in the front rank behind the imam. I tried to tell them to fill that space, but the imam began the prayer after no one stepped up to fill it. I'd never seen this before, and knowing them it is MOST LIKELY bid'ah. Anyone have any background on this repugnant act?
