Bismi'llaah wal hamdu lilaah was-salaatu wa salaam 'ala Rasulilaah wa ba'd:

wa 'Alaikum Salaam wa Rahmatullaah

I do not have a direct ruling from one of the 'Ulamaa, insha'Allaah somebody else will be able to provide it.  But until then, here are just a few things to consider:

The Prophet (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam) himself ate meat; he condoned and even encouraged eating it; and Allaah has required sacrificing at the time of Eid-ul-Adha for the purpose of consumption.

The Prophet even considered meat ?clean?, according to the narration of Ibn Abbas (Radiya 'Llahu 'anhu), ?The Prophet (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam) ate of the meat of a shoulder (by cutting the meat with his teeth), and then got up and offered the prayer without performing the ablution anew? (Bukhari).

It was also one of the favored foods to be taken on journeys. Jabir bin ?Abdullah (Radiya 'Llahu 'anhu),  narrates, ?During the life time of the Prophet (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam), we used to take the meat of sacrificed animals (as journey food) to Medina? (Bukhari, Hadith No. 474, Vol. 7).

As well, according to the narration of Aisha (Radiya 'Llahu 'anha), meat was also a favored gift. ?I never felt so jealous of any woman as I did of Khadija (Radiya 'Llahu 'anha), though she had died three years before the Prophet (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam) married me, and that was because I heard him mentioning her too often, and because his Lord had ordered him to give her the glad tidings that she would have a palace in Paradise, made of Qasab, and because he used to slaughter a sheep and distribute its meat among her friends? (Bukhari).

Barak Allaahu Feek

Assalamalaykum

Does anyone know if there is a ruling on the permissiblity of a muslim being a vegetarian? As many muslims are adopting this eating style.
