As-Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuhu I ask Al-Wahhidul Qahhar Al-Azeezul Jabbar that this rislaah will be a benefit for us all in rectifying the affairs of the Muslims with respect to the our blessed Kalimah! Allaahumma Ameen!

With respect to the issue concerning the eighth condition of our Shahadah, then it is very important for us to consider it and to reflect upon it as our shahadah is not complete without it.

For example, we can clearly see that our Shahadah comprises of Ruknaan [two pillars] namely, An-Nafi [negation] and Al-Ithbaat [affirmation]. We say, "Laa Ilaaha Illa Allaah" . In the first part of the this statement we find the Nafi [negation] which is Laa Ilaaha which basically means [Laa Ma3buda Bi-Haqqi] [That there is no deity possessing the sole right to be worshipped in truth and by right] and in the latter half of the statement we find the Ithbaat [Affirmation] [Illa Allaah] which is the affirmation of our statement which means [except Allaah].

So our Shahadah comprises of four kalimaat and they are Laa [which is called harfun nafi: the particle of negation] And the word Ilaah which has only one meaning in the Arabic language and that is Al-Ma3bood [that which is worshipped] and then we have the word [Illa] which is called Adaatul Istithnaa [that which is utilized to indicate an exception] and lastly we have Laftzu Jalaalah [the expression of Majesty and Greatness] and that is Allaah's name.

It is noteworthy to mention that the word Ilaah [that which is worshipped] can be divided into two categories namely, Ilaahun Haqq wa Huwa Allaah wa Ilaahun Baatil wa Huwa Kullu Man Yu3bad  Min Doonillah [And that is everything that is worshipped besides Allaah]. As for Ilaahun Haqq then this refers to Allaah alone as He is the only One worthy of worship in truth and by right and then there is Ilaahun Baatil and this refers to the false deities or that which is worshipped but  not in truth nor does it possess the right to be worshipped.

Insha Allaah we will give a few definitions concerning the meaning of At-Tawghoot. Firstly, the word Tawghoot is Mushtaqqun [derived] from the word Tughyaan which means Tajaawazal Hadd to exceed the limits.

And Ameerul Mu'mineen Umar Ibn Khattab Al-Faaruq[radhia Allaahu Anhu] defined At-Tawghoot as: "Ash-Shaytawn [The Devil].

And the Imaam of Darul Hijrah Maalik Ibn Anas [rahimahullah] defined Tawghoot as: "Kullu Man Yu3badu Min Doonillaah" Everyone who is worshipped other than Allaah.

And the Sheikh, the Mujaahid Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab [rahimahullah] increased slightly on Imaam Maalik's definition and said At-Tawghoot: Kullu Man Yu3badu Min Doonillaah wa Huwa Radiyan. Everyone that is worshipped besides Allaah and they are pleased with being worshipped.

Through out the Qur'aan Al-Kareem we see a number of examples of Nafi and Ithbaat and this is the primary basis of the eighth conditon to our Shahadah. For example, Allaah Jalla Jallaalahu says:

"Wa Idh Qaala Ibraheemu Li-Abeehi wa Qawmeehi, Innanee Baraa'un Mimmaa Ta3budoon, Illa Alladhe Fataranee Fa' Innahu Sayahdeen, Wa Ja3alahaa Baaqiyatan Fee Aqibihi La'3alahum Yarji3'oon." [Zukhroof :26-28]

Allaah says: "And when Ibraheem said to his father and his people, indeed I am FREE from that which you worship EXCEPT for Him who has created me for verily He shall guide me aright and He has made it [Our Shahadah] a lasting word to dwell amongst my progeny so that they may return." [Zukhroof :26-28]

From this verse we see can clearly see the Nafi and the Ithbaat and the Walaa [Aliegance] and the Baraa [Disassociation and Disavowment] that is clearly based on our Tawheed. We see firstly, that Ibraheem [alayhis salam] declares his freedom from his father and his people and that which they worshipped  and this is the Nafi [Negation] and then we see the Ithbaat [Affirmation] of his statement in "Illa Alladhee Fataranee" [Except Him who has created me]. Likewise, we have an abundance of examples that illustrate these two pillars in our deen and I shall list one more for the benefit of the believers. Allaah Jalla Jallaalahu says:

"Laysa Kamithlihi Shayun wa Huwa Samee'ul Baseer" [Shura:11]

Allaah says,"Laysa Kamithlihi Shayun"

There is nothing like Him" means:

Ay: Laysa Kallaahi Shayun
There is nothing like Allaah and this is the Nafi [Negation].

As for: "Wa Huwa Samee'ul Baseer"

"And He is the All Hearing the All Seeing" then that is the Ithbaat [Affirmation] that there is nothing like Allaah YET He possesses the abilty to hear and see. And this is the example of Nafi and Ithbaat.

Insha Allaah we can now go into issue of the eighth condition of the shahadah as we are now armed with the Nafi and Ithbaat. The crux of the matter here is the statement of Allaah Azza wa Jaal:

"Faman Yakfur Bit-Tawghoot wa Yu'min Billaahi Faqadis-Stamsaka Bil-Urwaatil Wuthqaa Laan Fisaama Laha Wallaahu Samee'ul Aleem." [2:256]

Allaah says: And whoever disbelieves in Tawghoot [false deities] and believes in Allaah then he has grasp the tightest handhold that shall never break and Allaah is the all Hearer the All Knower." [2:256]

Of course we see the Nafi and Ithbaat here as well so our Tawheed is not correct rather our Shahadah is not correct except that we disbelieve in the false deities [tawghoot] and we affirm belief in Allaah and then we shall have the Urwaatil Wuthqaa [the tightest handhold that shall never break and that is our kalimah ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa Allaah as Ibn Abbas explains  when he said,"Al-Urwaatil Wuthqaa Qaala Laa Ilaaha Illa Allaah.] Rejection of anything worshipped besides Allaah: The meaning of this condition is that one must stay clear of and distance himself from all acts of worship other than the worship of Allaah. And he must recognize, with certainty that all acts of worship, which are not done solely for Allaah, are false and to be rejected.

Wa Sallallaahu wa Sallam Ala Nabiyeena Muhammad wa Ala Aalihi wa Saahbihi wa Sallam wa Subhanaka Allaahumaa wa Bi-Hamdika Ash-Hadu An Laa Ilaaha Illa Anta Astghfiruka wa Atoobu Ilayka.

Afwaan Yaa Ikhwaananaa Baraaka Allaahu Feekum wa Jazaka Allaahu Khayran wa Ahsanullaahu Ilaykum Jamee'an I made a mistake in the verse where Allaah Al-Maalikul Barru Ra'oofur-Raheem says:

Wa Idh Qaala Ibraheem Li-Abeehi wa Qawmeehi, Innanee Baraa'un Mimmaa Ta3budoon, Illa Alladhe Fataranee Fa'innahu Sayahdeen, wa Ja'3alaha KALIMATAN Baaqiyatan Fee Aqibihi La'a3lahum Yarji'oon."

I left out the word KALIMATAN.

As-Salaamu 'alaykum,
this is taken from al-Qawlul-Mufeed fee adillatut-Tawheed by Shaykh Muhammad ibn 'Abdul-Wahhaab al-Wasaabee. I have summarized it for brevity.

First Condition:  Knowledge (al-?Ilm) of the meaning of its negation and affirmation, negating Ignorance:

Allaah Most High says:  ?So know that Laa ilaaha illa-llaah.? [Muhammad (47):19]

And ?Uthmaan ibn ?Affaan (radiyallaahu ?anhu) said:  Allaah?s Messenger (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) said: ?Whoever dies knowing that Laa ilaaha illa-llaah will enter Paradise.? [Muslim (no.26)]

Second Condition: Certainty (al-Yaqeen), that is: that which negates Doubt:

Allaah said: ?The believers are only those who have believed in Allaah and His Messenger, and afterward doubt not, but strive with their wealth and their lives for the cause of Allaah. Those, they are the truthful.? [al-Hujuraat (49):15]

So Allaah made a condition for the truthfulness of their faith (eemaan) in Allaah and His Messenger that they do not doubt, meaning they don?t have uncertainty.  Aboo Hurairah (radiyallaahu ?anhu) reported: Allaah?s Messenger (Sallallaahu ?alayhi wasallam) said:  ?Whomever you meet behind this wall, testifying that Laa ilaaha illa-llaah, being certain about it in his heart, then give him glad tidings of Paradise.?  [Muslim (no.31)]
So he (Sallallaahu ?alayhi wasallam) made certainty in his heart, without any doubt, a condition for entering Paradise.

Third Condition:  Acceptance (al-Qabool) of what this statement entails by the heart and the tongue, negating rejection:

Allaah said: ?And when it is said them that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah, they puff themselves up with pride.  And they said: ?Are we going to abandon our gods for the sake of a mad poet???   [as-Saaffaat (37):35-6]

Fourth Condition:  Compliance (al-Inqiyaad) and Submission (al-Istislaam) which shows a negation of Abandonment :

Allaah says: ?And whoever surrenders his face (himself) to Allaah while he is a Muhsin (a good-doer), then he has indeed grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold.?  [Luqmaan (31):22]

And the meaning of ?surrenders his face?: he submits himself.
And a Muhsin is: a Muwahhid (one who affirms the Tawheed of Allaah).
And the most trustworthy handhold is:  Laa ilaaha illa-llaah.

Fifth Condition:  Truthfulness (as-Sidq), negation of Denial and Fallacy:

And it is to say this statement (Laa ilaaha illa-llaah), affirming it with the heart, for verily saying it with the tongue and not affirming it with the heart, then he is lying hypocrite.

Allaah said:  ?And from amongst mankind are those who say: ?We believe in Allaah and the Last Day?, while in fact they are not believers.  They think to deceive Allaah and those who believe, while they only deceive themselves without knowing. There is a disease in their hearts and Allaah has increased their disease.  A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies.?  [al-Baqarah (2):8-10]

And from Anas (radiyallaahu ?anhu) that Allaah?s Messenger (Sallallaahu ?alayhi wasallam) said: ?There is no one who testifies that Laa ilaaha illa-llaah and that Muhammad is Allaah?s Messenger, truthfully from his heart, except that Allaah has made the Fire forbidden for him.?  [al-Bukhaaree (no.128) and Muslim (no.32)]

Sixth Condition:  Sincerity (al-Ikhlaas), negation of Shirk, Nifaaq (hypocrisy), Riyaa? (doing deeds for showing off), and seeking fame:

And al-Ikhlaas is:  purification of the deed by a correct, righteous intention from all taints of Shirk.  Allaah Most High said: ?So worship Allaah (Alone) by doing deeds sincerely for His Sake.?  [az-Zumar (39):2]

And ?Utbaan ibn Maalik (radiyallaahu ?anhu) said: Allaah?s Messenger (Sallallaahu ?alayhi wasallam) said:  ?Verily Allaah has forbidden the Fire for the one who says ?Laa ilaaha illa-llaah?, seeking thereby the Face of Allaah.?  [al-Bukhaaree (no.415) and Muslim (no.263)]

Seventh Condition:  Love (al-Muhabah) for this great, blessed statement and what it necessitates and attests to, and love for its people who actualize and comply with its conditions, and hating what opposes that:

Allaah said:  ?And of mankind are some who take (for whorship) others besides Allaah to be called upon. They love them as they love Allaah. But those who believe love Allaah more (than anything).? [al-Baqarah (2):165]

So the people of Laa ilaaha illa-llaah love Allaah with a sincere love, and the people of Shirk love Him and love others alongside with Him, and this negates a prerequisite of Laa ilaaha illa-llaah.

Eighth Condition:  Not believing in false objects of worship, and they are those things which are worshipped besides Allaah while believing that Allaah is Lord, Creator, and deserves to be worshipped in Truth:

Allaah Most High said: ?Verily the Correct Path has become distinct from the wrong path. So whosoever disbelieves in at-Taaghoot (false objects of worship) and believes in Allaah, then he has grasped the most trusthworthy handhold, that will never break. And Allaah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.?  [al-Baqarah (2):256]

And from Taariq ibn Asheem (radiyallaahu ?anhu) who said:  I heard Allaah?s Messenger (Sallallaahu ?alayhi wasallam) say:  ?Whoever says ?Laa ilaaha illa-llaah? and disbelieves in whatever is worshipped besides Allaah, his wealth and his blood are forbidden, and his reckoning is with Allaah.?  [Muslim (no.23) and Ahmad (3/472)]
