Assalaamualaikum,

I heard from a relative of mine that wives are not allowed to call their husbands by their names and that this was not allowed in Islam.  Does someone have proof for or against this statement?

barakallah feek,
wassalaam,
abu abdurrahuman ifthikar ibn saifudeen

wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaah.

In Saheeh Muslim, we find the hadeeth of Anas about the death of Aboo Talhah's son and how his wife informed him of it.  Its a long hadeeth, and from it:

فَلَمَّا رَأَتْ أَنَّهُ قَدْ شَبِعَ وَأَصَابَ مِنْهَا قَالَتْ يَا أَبَا طَلْحَةَ أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ أَنَّ قَوْمًا أَعَارُوا عَارِيَتَهُمْ أَهْلَ بَيْتٍ فَطَلَبُوا عَارِيَتَهُمْ أَلَهُمْ أَنْ يَمْنَعُوهُمْ قَالَ لَا
...So when she saw that he was content and had eaten from it, she said, "O Abaa Talhah!  Don't you see that if some people borrowed something from the people of another house, and then they requested their property back, would they have the right to refuse them?"  He said, "No."...

Saheeh Muslim #6272 (8/229-231 of Sharh An-Nawawee, Ma'rifah printing)

If you say, this is a woman addressing her husband with his kunyah, not his name, then I say that we have an excellent example in Ibraaheem ('alayhis-salaam), whose wife addressed him:

يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُ وَتَتْرُكُنَا بِهَذَا الْوَادِي الَّذِي لَيْسَ فِيهِ إِنْسٌ وَلَا شَيْءٌ
"...O Ibraaheem!  Where are you going, leaving us in this valley that has no people in it, and nothing else?..."

Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree #3364 (6/482-484 of Fat-hul-Baaree, Daar Al-Hadeeth printing)

So, as for Islaam prohibiting a woman from addressing her husband with his name, I never heard of that.  Prohibition is a ruling that requires proof.  So the burden of proof is on the claimant.  This is if the question is restricted to the Islaamic ruling alone.  However, if the question involves people's customs, then that is another issue.

And Allaah knows best.

Jazakallah khair brother Moosa for answering my question.  I suspected that it was because of cultural reasons and now my suspicions have been confirmed, alhamdulillah.

This theory of "Wives cannot call husbands by their names" was mentioned in Sri Lanka by those influenced by none other than the Tableeg Jamaath; may Allah (subhana wa talaa) guide them to the correct aqeedah and manhaj of His messenger (sallalaahu alaihi wasallam) and the companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) and may Allah (subhana wa talaa) protect all Muslims from the deviant teachings of the Tableeg Jamaath.

wassalaam,
