Beginning a Math Class with Khutbah al-Haajah
In last week's class (the second class on this book), Shaykh Ahmad (may Allaah preserve him) was asked about a teacher beginning a math class with khutbah al-haajah ("Innal-hamda lillaah, nahmaduhu, wa nasta'eenuhu..."), and for other dunyaa related things.
His answer was very insightful and beneficial. He said that it is OK to begin dunyaa affairs with khutbah al-haajah, since the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) used to use it at marriages. Even though marriages have Islaamic guidelines, they are considered dunyaa affairs, and this is understood from the hadeeth of 'Umar, "Verily, actions are only by their intentions, and a person will only have (as a reward) what he intended. So whoever's migration was for Allaah and His Messenger, then his migration was (truly) for Allaah and His Messenger. And whoever's migration was for some dunyaa affair, or to marry some woman, then (the reward of) his migration will be (based on) whatever his migration was for." [Bukhaaree/Muslim]
This shows that marriage is a dunyaa affair, and thus, since the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) used to deliver khutbah al-haajah at this occasion, then there is nothing preventing you from doing so in your math lessons and other similar occasions, and Allaah knows best.
