Shaikh Saalih ibn Fawzaan was asked,

Whoever fasts making up for a previous one is it allowed for him to break it and does this also include the nafl fast?

He answered, It is not permissible for one who intends to make up a legislated fast to break it because if he intended it and begun it then it is compulsory for him to complete it because if he enters into the compulsory it is compulsory for him to complete it and it is not permissible for him to break it. The allowance is only before you enter into the compulsory so it?s not allowed to break it.

As for the fast which is nafl then it is allowed for him to break it because it is not binding upon him to fast but it is better for him to complete it and not break it and there is no blame upon him. Indeed the prophet صلي الله عليه و سلم entered his house while he was fasting a nafl fast and when he found food which was given to him as a gift he ate from it and broke his fast. This indicates that the nafl fast is not compulsory to complete.
