PROLONGING THE DUAA OF QUNOOT  (Translated by Dawud Burbank)

Shaikh Muqbil ibn Haadee al-Waadi`ee was asked:

What is the ruling on the duaa in the Taraaweeh Prayer, and what is the authenticity of the hadeeth for raising the hands in the Witr Prayer- along with a mention of the evidence?

The response:
As for duaa in the Taraaweeh Prayer, lengthening it as is done, then that is an innovation, an innovation, an innovation (bid`ah, bidıah, bidıah). The Prophet (صلّى الله عليه و سلّم) taught al-Hasan to say:

(O Allaah! Continually guide me and make me amongst those whom You have guided; and make me one of those whom You save and make secure from all evils; and make me one of those whom You love, and whose affairs You take care of; and grant me blessings in all that You have given me; and save ne from the evil of what You have decreed; for You alone decree, and none can contradict Your Decree. None can humiliate those whom You have befriended, and those who are enemies to You will never have dignity and honour. Exalted are You, O Allaah, and Supreme.)

Likewise what occurs in the Haramayn (i.e.Makkah and al-Madeenah) with regard to prolonging that, then it is not legislated; and the best way is the way of Muhammad

As for raising the hands, then it is reported by way of Abdullaah ibn Naafi ibn Abil-Amyaa, and he is weak (daeef); and it occurs in the Musnad of Imaam Ahmad as a hadeeth of Anas, and its basis occurs in the two
Saheehs, but it does not mention raising the hands, so we are in doubt as to its establishment; so raising the hands in the du`aa of Qunoot is not legislated.

[Tuhfatul-Mujeeb `alaa Asilatil-haadir wal-ghareebı(pp.137-138) of Shaikh Muqbil.]

*****

as-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullaah

Jazaak Allaahu khayran for conveying this.  This is the haqq.

Sadly, many Muslims, even some claiming Salafiyyah, follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) in general, but when it comes to the witr qunoot in ramadhaan, they EXPRESSLY prefer the newly invented practices (singing prolonged rhyming supplications) of today's imaams over the simple and easy sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam).

And it is not permissible for anyone to prefer these modern innovations over the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), under the guise of "its happening in the Haram".  This is one of the practices that go on in the two Harams that the scholars are not pleased with.  May Allaah grant us understanding in the Religion.

"Raising the two hands in the qunoot is an established Sunnah from the Prophet (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) in the qunoot an-naazila (due to a calamity), and an established (practice) of some of the Companions for the qunoot of the witr such as 'Umar and Ibn Mas'ood."

Regarding what has been attributed to 'Umar and Ibn Mas'ood, that: "Raising the two hands in the qunoot an-naazila (due to a calamity)... [is] an established (practice) of some of the Companions for the qunoot of the witr such as 'Umar and Ibn Mas'ood."

The qunoot an-naazilah is a Sunnah to be done at a time of need.  Of course, we could say that we are always in need of something from Allaah, but that is stretching the intended meaning and true place of the Sunnah of Qunoot an-Naazilah.  It is to be done selectively in times of need, and it is to supplicate for or against a people.  When it becomes an everyday practice that is never left off (which it wasn't at the time of its legislation!), done in a way that doesn't even fit the description of an-naazilah, then it becomes an application of a Sunnah in other than its legislated place, which is known as "bid'ah idhaafiyyah"!!

On top of this, it has become chosen over the consistent practice of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam).  If a man were to pray (in many places) using the exact supplication of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), not adding anything to it, the people would become upset and feel cheated, and say things like, "That's it?!" or "What happened to the qunoot?"  And some of them would even try to find another masjid!  This is the issue that makes it a horrible innovation - that it has replaced the true practice of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)!

(My discussion here is not about the issue of raising the hands or not raising them.)

And Allaah knows best.
