assalamu alaykum

I was wondering is it permissable for us to make get togethers for when people are leaving? For example everytime a bro/sis is about to make hijrah that we (the people) make a get together. Where there is food, etc? I hope I have made myself clear.

I mean
#1 Did the sahabah do such things?
#2 If they didn't. Would it be permissble for us to do this?
#3 If it is done all the time when someone leaves is this a kind of bid'ah?

Jazakum Allahu khayrun and May Allah subana wa ta'ala make it so that we get some answers on this issue. Because it does happen a lot.

As salaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. Umm 'Abdillaah Al Waadi'iyyah (hafidhahallaah) was asked about the permissibility of having a gathering for the one who is about to make hijrah, and giving them gifts.

She said, "If the intention behind it was 'ebaadah (worship), and it was being done seeking nearness to Allaah, then it is bid'ah (an innovation), and not permissible."

"However, if the intention was not 'ebaadah, nor seeking nearness to Allaah, then it is not bid'ah, and therefore it is permissible."

NOTE BY ME UMM MINNATULLAH: Someone send this to me in a pm and I just wanted to share it with everyone. I am still not clear on this issue though. I thougt we are suppose to do everything for Allah's pleasure and as a means of worship and seeking nearness. That's why I am confused by this answer.... Jazakum Allahu khayrun.
