BISMILLAH....
AS SALAAMU ALAIKUM

IS IT FROM THE SUNNAH TO GIVE SALAAMS BEFORE ASKING A QUESTION? (DURING LECTURES AND THE LIKE)

I ASK BECAUSE IT HAS BECOME COMMON AND I HAVE NOT HEARD OF ANY DALEEL REGARDING THIS ACTION. ...BARAKALLAHU FEEKUM.....

AS SALAAMU ALAIKUM......

We ask the 'ulamaa' questions both verbally and in writing all the time.  I personally have never heard any of them point this out.

There is the hadeeth of Ibn 'Umar, radhiyallaahu 'anhu:

السلام قبل السؤال، فمن بدأكم بالسؤال قبل السلام فلا تجيبوه

"The salaam is before the question, so whoever begins with a question before giving salaams, then DO NOT ANSWER HIM."

It was collected by Ibn 'Adiyy in Al-Kaamil (2/303) as Al-Albaanee says in Silsilatul-Ahaadeethis-Saheehah #816.  The hadeeth is hasan according to Al-Albaanee.

I doubt the hadeeth is to be applied to the situation of someone asking a question at a lecture, since we have books about the manners of seeking knowledge, and I have not read anything about this.  Nor have I heard our scholars ever mention this to us.  Perhaps other students can post something if they have been corrected and told to give salaams before questioning.

But if someone used this hadeeth in that situaiton, then its apparent wording is a somewhat of a proof.  It would be good if they could further explain the proper implementation of the hadeeth or other proofs for this action.  I am sure the hadeeth can be applied to when you meet someone or a group and he or they question you without initiating the conversation with salaams.  As for other than this type of situation, I don't know if the hadeeth applies.

And there is the hadeeth of the one who prayed badly, and it is mentioned in some of the versions of that narration that he gave salaams to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) each time he came (3 times total).  (Bukhaaree and Muslim, see As-Silsilah 1/363)  But using this for a proof may be weak, since there was a seperation between them when the man went to pray each time.  Al-'Allaamah Siddeeq Hasan Khaan said about this hadeeth, "If a man gives salaams to someone, and then meets him again shortly after, then it is Sunnah for him to give him salaams a second time, and then a third time..." (See As-Silsilah 1/363)

And the companions used to be stern in giving the salaams to each other whenever they seperated from each other even if it was due to something as insignificant as a tree, keeping to the hadeeth:

إذا لقي أحدكم أخاه فليسلم عليه، فإن حالت بينهما شجرة أو جدار أو حجر ثم لقيه، فليسلم عليه أيضا

"When one of you meets his brother, let him give salaams to him, and then if a tree, wall, or rock seperate them, let him give salaams again."

This is found in Aboo Daawood and At-Tirmithee, and Al-Albaanee authenticated it in Silsilatul-Ahaadeethis-Saheehah #186.

And Allaah knows best.

As sallam ualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatahu

Akhee Musa, I remember hearing a tape of sheikh Nasir about a week or so ago. A questioner begings to ask a question but before that he gives salaam to the sheikh. The sheikh then goes on to correct this and said that it was not from the way of the Prophet and his companions when asking questions. This is just a vague recollection, and unfortunatly i cant really get the tape out right this minute as I have packed everything away (inshallah I should be returning back to Jeddah tomorrow from Marrakesh).
Inshallah within a few days if i can find that tape (as i dont remember the particular title) I will let you know what I heard. If i cant locate or it takes longer (as I dont have regular internet access at the moment in Jeddah) then it would be good if one of the other brothers could locate it.

Barakallhu feekum
