Bismi'llaah wal hamdu lilaah was-salaatu wa salaam 'ala Rasulilaah wa ba'd:

as-Salaamu 'Alaikum,

Ya ikhwaan, I have a familiy member who is a muqallid of the Jamaa'aatul Tableegh, astaughfirullaah.  I have a question regarding one of his many strange practices. Whenever he or his children clip their fingernails and toenails, he fanatically demands that they gather them (the clippings) all up and dig a small hole outside and bury them. He does this and demands his children to do this because he says it protects them from the evil-eye. If this deen were based on "opinion" I would think that fanatically sticking to this and DEMANDING it of his children is a form of ghuloo and would constitute a type of Superstition, waAllaahu 'alam, because it is Allaah alone who has the power to protect or cause harm to his servants. However, I would like to confirm this in order to prevent any shubhah and to make tasdeeq of the matter.

I was wondering if anyone has any daleel regarding this? I've been searching for an authentic athar which contains a hujjah for burying ones nail trimmings. If anyone knows where to find it, please post it here insha'Allaah.  Also, if such a proof does exist, what are the factors that would neccesitate this (burying the nails) and is it something that must be done EVERYTIME one trims his or her nails?

I have stopped asking him (my Tableeghee family member) for his daleel because he follows so many da'eef and fabricated ahadeeth that I no longer trust him and the Tableeghees are well known for their ibtidaa.  I would greatly appreciate it if one of the brothers or sisters could shed some light on this topic insha'Allaahu ta'ala.

Barak Allaahu Feekum,

Ya Abaa Ukkaasha wa Abaa Hussaam,

May Allaah reward you both for the info. you've provided.  Now that the evidence for this (burial of the nails) is clearly established, I would like to know if there exists an authentic athar that relates to burying the nails, hair, teeth etc. out of fear of the "evil-eye"?  Secondly, would it be a sin NOT to bury ones nails or hair?  For example, is it obligatory upon a person to collect his own hair from the floor of a barbershop?   And may Allaah reward anyone who shares what they know or are able to present regarding this topic.

walaikum salaam,

There are a number angles to this issue (as mentioned, not just that of burying the nails).Perhaps you need to put your question to a scholar because of the angle of your question related to evil eye ( I believe they also relate this to magic too.) Allahu Allam.

Below another answer by Shaikh Uthaimeen. I hope this helps.

Found in the Book Islaamic Fatwa Regarding Women Pg 360 (published by darussalam)

Is it or Is it not Sunnah to Bury One's Nails and Hairs after cutting them?

Question 331: I have seen people, especially women, burying their hair and nails after they have cut them on the basis that leaving them in the open is a sin. To what extent is this correct?

Response: The scholars state that it is best and prefered to bury such hairs and nails. Such has been reported from some of the Companions. However, it is not true to say that leaving them in the open or throwing them in a specific place is considered a sin.

Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen.
