Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah) said:

How many times has someone got mumtaaz (excellent grades) with the highest honors but he has no understanding!?

And how many times has someone with only passing grades attained true knowledge and understanding!?

It is not about certificates of achievement; it is about having knowledge and a true understanding of it.

Shaikh Muqbil (rahimahullaah) said:
quote:
This was since some of the classes there were successive while others were combined. So it was a like a repetition of what we had studied in the Faculty of Da'wah. I completed both Faculty courses, all praise be to Allaah, and I was given two degrees. However, all praise be to Allaah, I give no regard to certificates; what merits recognition in my opinion is knowledge.

The following was relayed from Shaikh Muqbil's works:
quote:
He continued by stating that when he studied in the University of Medina, there would be at times close to 180 students in a class and from them two or three truly benefitted, but many graduated ignorant. He also mentioned that a brother who graduated from the University of Medina asked him is there an authentic hadeeth about praying in the shoes and this brother studied Umdatul-Ahkam and Subluus-Salaam in the university for four years.

Thus, it is extremely important for the students (and the Muslims, in general) to remind themselves to sincerely act upon the authentic knowledge that Allaah has guided them to.

Reported by Ahmad [5/363], Al-Marwazee in Zawaa`id Az-Zuhd [no. 412], An-Nasaa`ee in Al-Kubraa as mentioned in Tuhfah Al-Ashraaf [11/199] The isnaad is Saheeh.

Some of these graduates take their certificates and shop them around to the highest-bidding masjid, regardless of the 'aqeedah that masjid expects him to "respect" and support. So some of these people sell the pure and clear Salafee 'aqeedah they learned from the righteous 'ulemma of Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama'ah for the dunya, imitating mute shayaateen (devils) in keeping quiet about shirk and bid'ah and transgressions. What an evil exchange!

These people risk their religion - instead of fearing Allaah alone, relying on Him alone, implementing the tremendously beneficial Sunnah of Du'aa al-Istikhaara, and making a decision with the akhira heavy on their mind.

The following is a beautiful example of a student making a decision with the akhira heavy on his mind, fearing his standing before Allaah on the Day of Judgement regarding his decision. For obvious reasons, his name will not be mentioned so as to not make a fitnah for him (hafidhahullaah).

Unemployed and with a family to support, this student went to a masjid wherein its shoora was looking for an Imam. He answered their questions with responses in accordance with the Qur`an and Sunnah upon the understanding of the Salaf of this Ummah. And then they said to him, "no shirk, bid'ah or ribaa' (usury)." He thought they meant they don't want shirk, bid'ah, or ribaa`, so he was pleased for the sake of Allaah. Realizing he didn't get what they maliciously meant, they spelled it out for him: No, we don't want you to forbid shirk, or bid'ah or ribaa`.

Allaahul Musta'an.

The Salafee student politely asked to be excused and he left, fearing for his religion. This masjid eventually hired a Brawlee grave-worshipper as their imam. So they, literally, chose shirk over Tawheed. What an evil exchange!

Whereas Allaah, The Mighty and Majestic, said (what means):

quote:
It is not for the Mushrikoon (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allaah), to maintain the Mosques of Allaah, while they witness against their ownselves of disbelief. The works of such are in vain and in Fire shall they abide. The Mosques of Allaah shall be maintained only by those who believe in Allaah and the Last Day; perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give Zakat and fear none but Allaah. It is they who are expected to be on true guidance. (At-Tawbah 9:18)

This student is now an Imam in a growing Salafee community. SubhanAllaah!

The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said:
quote:
Indeed you will not leave anything for the sake of Allaah except that Allaah will replace it with something better than it.
Allaah Ta'aala told the truth, and His Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) told the truth.

May Allaah preserve the above-mentioned student and all the Salafee students who relay the advices of the 'ulemma (rahimahumullaah), not fearing the blame of the blamers, not fearing the blame of the people who have fallen into hizbiyyah, bid'ah and even personality-worship.

And there other examples of students refusing to follow anyone in opposition to what Allaah revealed. One such student (also with a family) worked - without pay, because the masjid oppressively refused to pay him for not going along with them in opposition to the truth - and this student continued to teach the people Tawheed and Sunnah and the correct 'aqeedah, not fearing the blame of the blamers, until his contract expired.

quote:
Allaah Ta'aala said: and that which is with Allaah is the Best for Al-Abraar (those who are obedient to Allaah and follow strictly His Orders). (Aali Imran, ayah 198)

quote:
'Abdullaah ibn al-Mubarak Maroodi (rahimahullaah) said: Know, ya akhee (my brother) that death is a gift from Allaah for whoever meets Allaah subhanahu wa ta'aala upon the Sunnah of Muhammad (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). And we complain to Allaah concerning the death of our brothers, and the fewness of those who support the religion, and the appearance of many innovations in the religion.

May Allaah grant these Salafee students a tremendous reward, and make this a means of expiation of their sins. Have no doubt that Allaah is All-Knowing, The Most Just, and that nothing is hidden from Him, not even what one's soul whispers to himself.

Sleeping hungry upon Salafiyyah is way better than sleeping with a full stomach upon Hizbiyyah!

Oh Allaah, Benefit Me By That Which You Have Taught Me

Excerpt:
quote:
On the authority of Anas ibn Maalik (radi Allahu 'anhu) who said: The Messenger of Allaah (sallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) used to say (what means):

Oh Allaah, benefit me by that which you have taught me, teach me that which will benefit me, and provide me with knowledge that will benefit me.
quote:
Allahumman fa'nee bi-maa 'allam-ta-nee wa 'allim-nee maa yanfa'u-nee war zuq-nee 'ilman yanfa'u-nee
[Collected by an-Nasaa'ee in al-Kubraa: 7868; and al-Haakim: 1:510]

Excerpt of Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan's explanation of the above hadeeth:

quote:
"Oh Allaah, benefit me by that which you have taught me..."

(This is because) a person could have knowledge of something but not gain any benefit from it, and his knowledge (would then) become a proof against him. He would become like a donkey carrying books, carrying around knowledge but not receiving anything from them. So the intent is not merely to gain knowledge. However, the intent is (to gain) knowledge and action, the knowledge that benefits (its possessor).

Gems from Imam Al-Baghdaadee's book Al-Iqtidaa al-'Ilm al-'Amal (Knowledge Mandates Action), with the verification and notes by Imaam Al-Albanee (rahimahumullah)

[The following ahadeeth and athaar are not from the ones that Al-Albanee declared weak in his checking of this book.]

quote:
Usaamah ibn Zayd (radiallaahu 'anhu) narrated: The Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: A man will be brought on the Day of Judgement and he will be thrown into the Hell-Fire, so that his intestines will come out and he will go around like a donkey goes around the millstone. The people of Hell-Fire will gather around him and say: O so-and-so! What happened to you? Did you not used to order us with good and prohibit us from evil? He will say: I used to order you with good and not do it myself; and I used to prohibit you from evil and do it myself.

[Related al-Bukhaaree (6/331) and Muslim (18/118).]

quote:
Anas bin Malik (radiallaahu 'anhu) narrated: The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: On the night that I was ascended up to the heavens, I came upon a people whose lips were being cut off by pliers made from Fire. Every time their lips were severed, they would be brought back and formed again. So I said: 'O Jibreel, whor are these people? He said: 'They are speakers from your nation, who say words but do not do deeds, and who read the Book of Allaah yet do not act (on it).

[Al-Albanee (rahimahullah) said: Its chain of narration is sound (hasan). Al-Mundhiree attributed it to Ibn Abee Ad-Dunyaa, Ibn Hibbaan and al-Bayhaqee.]

quote:
Abu Hurairah (radiallaahu 'anhu) said: The example of knowledge that is not acted upon is like that of a treasure that is not spent from the Way of Allaah, Mighty and Sublime.

[Al-Albanee (rahimahullah) said: There is no harm using this in mawquf form, and the marfu' form of this can be found in Ahmad.]

From Imam Al-Baghdaadee's highly beneficial introduction is the following advice:
quote:
I advise you O seeker of knowledge to have a sincere and pure intention in your search for knowledge, and that you exert yourself in acting upon what it mandates (from action). This is since knowledge is a tree, and action is its fruit. And one can never be considered knowledgeable so long as he doesn't act upon what he knows.

It has also been stated, "Knowledge is a parent, and action is its offspring" and "knowledge comes with action, while narrating comes with investigating."

So do not feel satisfied with actions so long as you are lacking in knowledge, nor feel satisfied with knowledge so long as you fall short in producing actions. Rather, combine them both, even if your share of the two is small.

And from the treatsie are the following gems:
quote:
Abu 'Alee al-Hasan bin 'Alee bin Muhammad at-Tameemee informed us, saying: Abu Bakr Ahmad bin Ja'far bin Hamdaan bin Maalik Al-Qutay'ee narrated to us: 'Abdullaah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me, saying Abur-Rabee' (i.e 'Amr bin Sulaymaan) narrated to us, saying: Abul-Ash`hab narrated to me that Muhammad bin Waasi` said: Luqmaan said to his son:

My dear son, do not learn what you don't know until you (first) act upon what you (already) know.

quote:
Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Rizq informed us, saying: Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Nusayr al-Khaldee reported to us, saying: Muhammad bin 'abdillaah bin Sulaymaan Al-Hadramee narrated to us: Sa'eed bin 'Amr narrated to us, saying: Ja'far bin Sulaymaan narrated to us, saying: I heard Maalik bin Deenar say:

When the servant seeks knowledge in order to act on it, it humbles him. And when he seeks it for other than acting on it, it increases him in pride.

quote:
Muhammad ibn Ahmad bin Rizq and Al-Hasan bin Abee Bakr both informed us, saying: Abu Bakr Ahmad bin Sulaymaan bin Ayoob Al-'Abaadaanee narrated to us, saying: Muhammad bin 'Abdil-Malik Ad-Daqeeqee reported to us, 'Ubaydullaah bin Moosa narrated to us: Abu Bishr Al-Halabee narrated to us that Al-Hasan said:
quote:
Eeman is not just an outer decoration nor is it mere hope. Rather, it is that which settles in the hearts and which is confirmed in the actions. Whoever speaks a good statement and does unrighteous deeds, Allaah rejects his statement. And whoever speaks a good statement and does righteous deeds, his good deed serves to elevate his statement. This is since Allaah, The Most High, says:

To Him ascend the good words, and it is the righteous deed that raises it (up to Allaah). (Surah Faatir, ayah 10)

quote:
Yazeed bin Abee Ziyaad from Ibraaheem from 'Alqamah that 'Abdullaah ibn Mas'ood (radiallaahu 'anhu) said:

Learn! Learn! So when you have learned, then act.

quote:
Abul-Husayn Ahmad bin Al-Husayn bin Ahmad, the admonisher, informed us, saying: I heard Abu 'Abdillaah Ar-Roodhabaaree say:

Whoever goes out towards knowledge, intending (just to obtain) the knowledge [without acting upon it], knowledge doesn't benefit him. And whoever goes out towards knowledge, intending to act upon the knowledge, knowledge benefits him - even if it's a little.

He also said: I heard Abu 'Abdillaah Ar-Roodhabaaree say:
Knowledge is dependent upon action, and action is dependent upon sincerity. And doing things sincerely for the sake of Allaah produces understanding of Allaah, the Mighty and Sublime.

quote:
Abul-Qaasim 'Abdul-Kareem bin Hawaazin Al-Qushayree An-Naisapuree informed us, saying: I heard Muhammad bin Al-Husayn As-Sulamee say: I heard Abu Bakr Ar-Raazee say: I heard Al-Khawaas say:

Knowledge is not based on reporting many narrations. Rather, the one with (true) knowledge is only he who seeks after the knowledge, implements it and follows the aspects of the Sunnah - even if he only has a little knowledge.

quote:
Abu Hafs 'Umar bin Muhammad bin 'Alee bin 'Attiyah Al-Makkee informed us, saying: Yoosuf bin 'Umar bin Masroor Abul-Fat-H Al-Qawaas narrated to us: Ahmad bin 'Alee narrated to us: Ziyaad bin Ayoob narrated to us: Ahmad bin Abee Al-Hawaaree narrated to us, saying: 'Abbaas bin Ahmad narrated to me concerning the ayah: And those who strive for Our sake, We will surely guide them to Our paths... (Al-'Ankaboot, ayah 69)

Those who act upon what they know, We [Allaah] will surely guide them to (knowledge of) what they don't know.

quote:
And other gems, such as these statements from al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyaad:

A person with knowledge will not cease to be ignorant of what he knows until he acts upon it. So when he acts upon it, then he becomes a person with knowledge.
What was intended by the word 'knowledge' (in the Qur`an and Sunnah) was only 'action.' And knowledge indicates action.

It is upon the people to acquire knowledge. So when they attain knowledge, it is upon them to act (on it).

And these gems from 'Abdullaah Al-Mu'taz:

Knowledge without action is like a tree without fruit.
The knowledge of a hypocrite is in his speech, while the knowledge of a believer is in his action.

And Abu Qulaabah's statement: If Allaah presents you with knowledge, then present Him with worship, and do not let your only concern be to narrate it to the people.
Sufyaan ibn 'Uyainah was asked, "Who is a scholar?" He replied: The one who gives every hadeeth its due right (i.e from action).

Ibn 'Uyainah also said: If knowledge doesn't benefit you, it harms you.

May Allaah have mercy on all our righteous scholars.
