As Salaamu 'Alaikum wa Rahmatu Allaah ...

For you brothers who have access to the statements of the 'Ulamaa in the books of Rijaal, what can you provide me with regarding Hishaam ibn Al-Kalbi who authored Kitaabul Asnaam?  I am looking for any statements from the 'Ulamaa regarding Ibnul Kalbi himself as per his reliability or lack thereof as well as their statements regarding his above mentioned work.

My interest was sparked when I read in a translation of his Kitaabul Asnaam the following:

"We have been told that the Prophet of Allaah once mentioned Al-'Uzza saying, 'I have offered a white sheep to Al-'Uzza while I was a follower of the religion of my people.'"

He brings no Isnaad for this narration nor does he mention a source and it is in contradiction to what I have learned of the Prophet sallaallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam having been Haneef even prior to his Prophethood and his hatred of the Asnaam of his people.

If anyone could contribute with some narrations of his (sallaallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) abhorrence of the Asnaam, in his early years prior to prophethood, I would appreciate it as well.

Baaraka Allaahu feekum

According to many of the Ulamaa of the Sunnah and Hadeeth of the past, Hishaam ibnul Akhbaaree al-Baahir Muhammad ibn as-Saa'ib bin Bishr al-Kalbee ash-Shee'ee al-Koofee was only a person who spent his nights chatting, talking constantly about geneologies, stories and nothing was known from him of (correct) chains of narrations.

al-Imaam Ahmad ibn Hanbal said: "He was only a person who spent his nights chatting and talking about geneologies and I would not have thought that anyone would narrate from him!"

al-Imaam ad-Daaraqutnee and other than him said about him: " Matrookul Hadeeth or one upon whose extreme unreliability there is consensus".*

al-Imaam Ibn Asaakir said: "(He was a) Raafidhee[Shee'ee] and was not thiqah!"

al-Uqaylee, Ibnu Jaarood, Ibnus Sakan and others mentioned him among those who are du'afaa (weak narrators).

One of Hishaam ibnul Kalbee's bogus claims was that he memorized the entire Qur'aan in three days!

Hishaam ibnul Kalbee died in the year 204A.H. or a little after that.

And Allaah knows best!

*His father - who was a scholar of tafseer - was also known as one of the most well known notorious liars of al-Koofah

Ibn Hibbaan said about him in Al-Majrooheen: "He used to narrate the strangest reports that had NO ORIGIN...His narrations of falsehoods are so well-known there is no need for us to even describe them." [2/439, As-Samee'ee]

But in our day and time, where the people hunt for a statement of praise from someone so they can take from their beloved shaykh, the people of desires could find that Ath-Thahabee mentioned in Al-Meezaan that he was an "'allaamah" who a number of people took from, and that he had over 150 books that he authored. [4/304-305, Ma'aarif]  If they really wanted to go off the deep end for this person, they would begin to say that Ath-Thahabee was the only real scholar of hadeeth, and that he was the only one who was really balanced, and that Ahmad was too harsh, and Ad-Daaraqutnee had personal problems with him, and on and on...

The point is: The Deen is easy - the jarh is established and detailed, so there is no need to look to the statements of general praise of the majrooh.

And THIS is EXACTLY the REASON I left out the statement from al-Imaam adh-Dhahabee "al-Allaamah"!
