Q. Is it permissible to greet a fellow Muslim saying: "Al-Salamu `Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh wa Maghfiratuh (Peace, Mercy, Blessings and Forgiveness of Allah be upon you)"?

A: It is related by Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmidhy, who graded it as Hadith Hasan (good Hadith), on the authority of `Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) that he narrated, A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and greeted him saying, "Al-Salamu `Alaikum (peace be upon you)" and he replied to him. When the man sat down, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Ten (good deeds)." Another man came and greeted him saying, "Al-Salamu `Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi", and the Prophet (Peace and Mercy be upon him) replied. When the man sat down, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Twenty." A third man came and greeted him saying, "Al-Salamu `Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh (Peace, Mercy and Blessings of Allah be upon you)", and the Prophet replied. When the man sat down, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Thirty."

It is also related by Abu Dawud on the authority of Mu`adh ibn Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) who narrated that a man came and greeted the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying, "Al-Salamu `Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh wa Maghfiratuh". Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Forty (good deeds)," and he added, "Thus are the virtues." However, this narration containing the addition "wa Maghfiratuh" is weak and cannot stand as a proof.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions!

Shaykh al-Albaanee (may Allaah have Mercy on him) used to consider the hadeeth acceptable and reply to salaams adding, "wa maghfiratuh."

quote:
On the website of ... mentioned on 23rd September 2004 that Shaykh Alee Hasan Al-Halabee (Hafidhahu ýLlah) was asked and he confirmed that Shaykh Al-Albaanee (Rahimahullah) after constant research concluded that to make the increasement upon the noble salaam with ýwa maghfiratuhuý was not from the Sunnah."

Could you please confirm this and post accordingly on Salafitalk?

Shaykh al-Albaanee (may Allaah have Mercy on him) changed his positions on certain issues, and his writings show clearly that he loved the Sunnah and he loved that this Ummah follow the Sunnah, and that he he had no problem in clarifying all details when he changed positions on an issue.  This is what is well known from this great imaam.

The shaykh knew that many people all over the world only learned about adding "wa maghfiratuhu" through him, so he would have certainly written or said something about it if he changed his position!

The only thing I know of is that some people have misunderstood his words on the weakness of one of the relative proofs he used in the issue, and then assumed that he changed his position on the issue.  Two of the shaykh's students, Shaykh 'Alee al-Halabee (may Allaah correct his affairs) and Shaykh Mash-hoor Hasan (may Allaah preserve him), are quoted confirming that the shaykh did not change his position on the issue.  Refer to this thread for Shaykh Alee's words specifically (since there is a claim he said otherwise):

I hope this clears up any confusion on the issue.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I am not saying that Shaykh al-Albaanee's position is correct, I only mentioned it in the first place to show another scholarly position on the issue.

Is it permissible to initiate the Salaam with the addition of "wa maghfiratu"?

From what I understood from Br. Moosaa's (hafidhahullah) words Shaykh al-Albani allowed the reply with addition of "wa maghfiratuh"; but did he allow initiation with it also? Have any of the Salaf initiated salaam with "wa maghfiratuh"?

JazakAllah khayr.
