Important Clarification

Regarding the supplication I previously attributed to the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) mistakenly: When praised say, "O Allaah, do not hold me accountable for what they are saying, forgive me for what they do not know, and make me better than what they think."

After being alerted to this mistake by a dear brother of mine, I found that the du'aa' has been reported as the statement of:

    Ibn 'Umar the freed slave of 'Afrah (Az-Zuhd of Ibn Mubaarak, p.14)
    "One of the Companions," unnamed (Az-Zuhd of Ahmad, p.205)
    Yazeed ibn Maysarah (Hilyat al-Awliyaa, 5/240)
    Al-Awzaa'ee (Shu'ab al-Eemaan #4875)
    "Some of the Salaf," unnamed (Shu'ab al-Eemaan #4876)
    Aboo Bakr as-Siddeeq (Usd al-Ghaabah in Aboo Bakr's biography)


And that NONE of them attributed it to the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), so it seems to be that the best case scenario is that it is from Aboo Bakr and then some of the taabi'oon and those after them.

And this was a clear error from me, and I request anyone who learned this from me (or anyone else) to make a note of it - that it is not a hadeeth from the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam).

And Allaah is Ever-Pardoning, and He is generous and loves to pardon, so may He pardon me and you.
