Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatu,

I have a problem and I get different answers every time I ask this question, so I'm very confused. I'm scared my prayers might be invalid, or that I am missing the ones I should be praying. Here's the dilemma:

Around the time of my menses, I get 1 day pink, 3-4 days dark brown, 4-5 days red, 2-3 days mostly red/some brown, 1-2 days dark brown and then pink and it finishes.

What do I count as days of Haiz? What do I count as days of istihadha according to this situation?

Right now, from the day I see pink, I stop praying, and I count the first 10 days to be haiz and I take the rest as istihadha.

Is what I'm doing correct? Please help me, I have no idea who to ask.

Don't feel bad. It has been said that al-Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, studied the topic of menses for nine years before he understood it.

Questions:

Do your menses come on the same time every month? Example: May 1st to the 15th?

And do they stay on for the same amount of time every month? Example: 15 days etc...

In short, are your menses consistent in regard to the time of the month and length of days?

May Allah make your affairs easy!

Bismillah, Assalamu Alaykum

Yes, it comes at the same time every month and yes it's the same amount of time every month.

It's very regular in regards to the time it comes and the days I have it.

JazakAllaahu Khayran

بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركــــاته

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said there was no minimum or maximum for it; when the bleeding is present with its distinct qualities, this is menstruation, whether it is a little or a lot. He said:

"Menstruation (al-hayd): Allaah has attached numerous rulings to it in the Qurıaan and Sunnah, but He did not state the shortest or longest length (of a menstrual period), or the length of the period of tahaarah between two menstrual periods, even though the need to know that exists."

Then he said:

"Some of the scholars defined a maximum and minimum, but they differed concerning that, and some stated a maximum length without defining a minimum. The third view is most correct, which states that there is no minimum or maximum."

(Majmoo' al-Fataawaa, 19/237)

Shaykh Ibn Baaz was asked in Majmoo' al-Fataawa (10/214):

I noticed that when doing ghusl following my monthly period, which usually lasts for five days, sometimes a very small amount comes out of me, immediately after doing ghusl, then after that nothing comes out. I do not know whether I should assume that my regular period is five days and whatever comes after that does not count, and I should fast and pray and I donıt have to do anything else because of that, or I should regard that day as part of my period and not pray and fast then? Please note that this does not always happen, rather it is approximately every two or three cycles.

He replied:

If what comes out of you after you have purified yourself is yellowish or brownish, then it should not be regarded as anything that matters, rather it comes under the same ruling as urine. But if it is obviously blood, then it should be regarded as part of the period, so you have to repeat your ghusl, because of the report from Umm 'Atiyyah (may Allaah be pleased with her), who was one of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). She said: "We used not to regard yellowish or brownish discharge after purification as being anything that mattered."

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked in Fataawa al-Siyaam (p. 105): A woman says that her period came, then the bleeding stopped on the sixth day from Maghrib until twelve midnight, so she did ghusl on that day and fasted the following day. Then some brownish discharge came but she fasted that day. Is that to be regarded as part of her period even though her usual period is seven days?

He replied:

This brownish discharge is not part of the period. The brownish discharge that women get after the end of the period is not anything that matters. Umm 'Atiyaah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: "We used not to regard yellowish or brownish discharge after purification as being anything that mattered." According to another report: "We used not to regard it as anything that mattered" ı and she did not say after purification. Menstruation is blood, not brownish or yellowish discharge. Based on this, then this womanıs fast was valid, whether that was on the day when she did not see any brownish discharge or on the day when she did see some brownish discharge, because this brownish discharge is not menstruation.
