As salaamu 'alaika yah Moosa,

My question is: What about toddlers(1-3 years or so) crossing infront of your sutrah? They come fast like out of the corners, What should one do?
And if they cross past you does it make the salaah deficient or void?

May Allaah increase you in ilm and righteous actions. Ameen.

wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh

Due to the generality of the saheeh hadeeth collected by ibn Khuzaymah in his Saheeh (#800), on the authority of Ibn 'Umar:

quote:

‎‎ ‎‎‎‎‎‎‎‎‎ ‎‎‎‎‎ ‎‎‎ ‎‎‎‎‎‎‎‎
"Do not pray except toward a sutrah..."

It seems correct to say that praying toward a sutrah is obligatory.  However there is differing over this, as many scholars consider the sutrah to be recommended but not obligatory.

It also seems correct to say that this is for the imaam of the congregational prayer, as well as the one praying individually as well.

This would apply to any place, since a restriction to the masjid or other places would need a text.

So what seems to be correct, and Allaah knows best, and what is safest for sure (based on the aforementioned hadeeth), is that you pray with a sutrah in your house even when there is no one home.

And there is some mention of the issue of the importance and obligation of praying with sutrah even when you don't fear anyone passing in front of you in the book "Akh-taa' al-Musalleen" of Mash-hoor Hasan Salmaan (may Allaah preserve him).  And I think it is translated, at least in a summarized way.

And Allaah knows best.

As salaamu alaikum,

Does anyone have a link or anything that mentions about us needing a Sutra while praying in our houses? Like if we are the only ones home, do we still have to pray with something in front of us?
