Imaam Ahmad said: Ismaa'eel narrated to us that Yoonus
informed us on the authority of al-Hasan
عَنِ الأَسْوَدِ بْنِ سَرِيعٍ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
on the authority of al-Aswad ibn Saree' who said:
I came to the Messenger of Allaah
sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam
وَغَزَوْتُ مَعَهُ فَأَصَبْتُ ظَهْرًا فَقَتَلَ النَّاسُ يَوْمَئِذٍ حَتَّى قَتَلُوا الْوِلْدَانَ
And I had fought in a battle along with him and I had gained a camel (from the booty). And the people had killed
so fiercely that day that they had even killed some children
وَقَالَ مَرَّةً الذُّرِّيَّةَ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
And he said once (in one narration): thurriyyah (children/offspring).
So that reached the Messenger of Allaah
sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam
فَقَالَ مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ جَاوَزَهُمُ الْقَتْلُ الْيَوْمَ حَتَّى قَتَلُوا الذُّرِّيَّةَ
So he said: "What is with some people that the killing today
had caused them to go so far as to kill children?!"
فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّمَا هُمْ أَوْلادُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَقَالَ
So a man said, "O Messenger of Allaah! They are just
children of the polytheists!" So he said:
أَلا إِنَّ خِيَارَكُمْ أَبْنَاءُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلا لا تَقْتُلُوا ذُرِّيَّةً
"Nay, verily the best of you are the children of polytheists!"
Then he said, "Nay, do not kill children!"
أَلا لا تَقْتُلُوا ذُرِّيَّةً قَالَ كُلُّ نَسَمَةٍ تُولَدُ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ
"Nay, do not kill children!" Then he said,
"Every soul is born upon the Fitrah,
حَتَّى يُعْرِبَ عَنْهَا لِسَانُهَا فَأَبَوَاهَا يُهَوِّدَانِهَا وَيُنَصِّرَانِهَا
Up until its tongue speaks on behalf of it,
and its two parents make it a Jew or a Christian."

Al-Albaanee included it in his Silsilah al-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah (#402).

jazakallahu khairaa yaa Abal 'Abbaas for reminding us with this tremendous advice. I am glad you mentioned this at the time when you did, with the recent events in Beslan Russia where these misguided khaarijee individuals took to attacking a SCHOOL killing hundreds, half of which being CHILDREN!
Wallahi nothing made me sadder or angrier at the moment upon hearing this news of children being killed, or being starved and detained. Any of us who are parents should have felt some kind of anger or sadness for these children as well as the parents regardless of the fact that they were Kuffar, Wallahi this isnt the way! Wallahul Musta'aan
May Allah guide us all...

jazakallaahu khayr. in the arabic, you have the word dhurriyah beginning with a daal instead of a dhaal. barakallaahu feek.

a brother notified me that the letter in question was in fact a dhaal, but that the dot is covered by the dammah and shaddah. my mistake. barakallaahu feek.

As salaamu 'alaikum
BarakAllaahu feeka, yaa Moosaa
I wanted to ask , insha Allaah ,if this thread can be expanded to narrations dealing with the way the Prophet-SallAllaahu 'alaihi wa sallam-treated the kuffaar(prisoners and the like) during times of war.
This will help in clarifing, to the kuffaar we may come incontact with, the way the Prophet-SallAllaahu 'alaihi wa sallam dealt with prisoners of war and the like and what was not permissible in these times of war.
If possible, this will be very beneficial to myself and others, insha Allaah......
