Shaikh Ahmad Baazmool discusses the validity of

Salaatul-Jumu?ah in a place that is not a Masjid

Question: What are the conditions of Salaatul-Jumu?ah and is it a condition for the validity of Salaatul-Jumu?ah that it must be held in a masjid where the five daily prayers are established? We ask this because there are some people who have told us that the Jumu?ah prayer is only valid in a masjid where the five prayers are established daily.

Answer: The scholars have mentioned in the books of Fiqh a number of conditions for Salaatul-Jumu?ah. For example they have said that there must be two Khutbahs (sermons) given, and the two Khutbahs must be followed by a ritual prayer (Salaah), and the Salaah must be two rak?ahs (units of prayer), and it must be performed with a congregation. This condition of a congregation is fulfilled with the presence of at least three people, as some of the scholars have mentioned. Also the Jumu?ah prayer must be held within the time period in which Salaatul-Jumu?ah has been prescribed. However, the reason for all of these conditions is so that the Jumu?ah prayer in its form and appearance is according the way it was conducted in the time of the Prophet (sallallaahu ?alayhi wa sallam) by the Prophet (sallallaahu ?alayhi wa sallam) and his companions. This is the purpose of the scholars! stipulating these conditions. As far as many of the conditions we hear from some of the people, then many of those conditions do not have any proof to support them. For example some people stipulate that there must be a large number of people present and so forth. As far as what these people have said in reference to the Jumu?ah prayer not being valid in a place unless it is held in a masjid where the five prayers are established, then this is incorrect. Rather, the Jumu?ah prayer may be held anywhere, even in a place that is not a masjid, or a place that is outside for example, just like the Musalla for the ?Eid prayer that is held outside. And Allaah knows best.

Shaikh Ahmad Baazmool

Salaam 'alaykum wa Rahmatullaah wa Barakatu,

Does the minimum of three people attending the Jumu'aah include the kateeb or is this in addition to the kateeb? And is this limited to the males who have reached the age of responsibility or does it include other than them?

Salaam 'alaykum wa Rahmatullaah,
Abu Muhammad Hasan Grooms as-Salafee
