In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciul, the Bestower of Mercy

As-Salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh!

Should I pronounce the 'Adhaan into my child's ear when he/she is born next month (Inshaa'Allaah)? I am a touch confused on this issue and I have been through my books but can only find conflicting statements. Our brother, Aboo Talha Daawood Burbank, brought proof in the book he translated, "Manners in Welcoming the Newborn in Islaam" that al-Muhaddith, Shaykh al-Albaanee (Rahimahullaah) said the Hadeeth was weak. But in another book I purchased from Salafi Pubs, "Raising Children according to the Qur'aan and the Sunnah" on page 8, the author advises that one should pronounce the 'Adhaan.

If a brother or sister can clarify this issue for me then please reply as soon as possible, because my child is due within the next few weeks, bi ithnillaah.

Wallaahu 'aalam

Jazzak Allaahu khayr,

Was-Salaam

Akhook,

Muhammad ibn Robert McWhinnie, as-Skatlandee

wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

Just a small note Akhi, (I think) you forgot to mention "insha'allaah" when you said: "...when he/she is born next month?".

May Allaah bless you and your family with a righteous child and a healthy one, Aameen.

As-Salaamu Alaikum And May Allaah Bless You And Your Family With Goodness, Ameen

This issue is a matter of confusion for some namely because in some salafi based articles it is mentioned that it is saheeh while others da'eef and I remember reading one of the salafi websites and in an article on how to welcome the newborn it stated that the hadeeth was saheeh which I thought was a mistake and maybe they forgot to update the article.

and on top of that some of shaykh Al-Albaanee's  books he stated the hadeeth about calling the adhaan in the newborn's right ear is Saheeh (authentic),

However he later changed his mind on the ruling citing that it was a mistake because all the chains of this hadeeth are weak, So shaykh Al-Albaanee's last position was that it is a weak hadeeth and should not be acted upon. Refer to the book Kalimatut-Tayyiba of Ibn Taymeeyah edited By Shaykh Al-Albaanee. I can show you more places in which he weakened this hadeeth but I am not in my library at the moment so I cant be specific, however If none of the brothers answers this post then Insha Allaah when I get back to my library I will post it (Ya'nee The Hadeeth references).

note: there is another hadeeth that mentions the addition "and the Iqaamah on the left ear" in which Shaykh Al-Albaanee always declared weak.

so beware of this bid'ah of calling the adhaan and/or the iqaamah on the new born, And Allaah Knows Best

it is narrated from Aboo Raafi? that he said:
"I saw the Prophet give Adhan for the Prayer in the ear of al-Husayn ibn ?Alee when his mother Faatimah (Radhi'Allaahu Anhaa) gave birth to him." (Reported by Ahmad, Aboo Daawood and At-Tirmidhee who declared it ?hasan? and by Shaikh al-Albaanee in ?al-Irwaa? #1173).

Also Refer To the book Al-Kalim At-Tayyib published in 2001 where Al-Albaanee Says Its Isnaad Is Da'eef Hadeeth # 211.

Also In Al-Albaanee?s Book Saheeh Al-Kalim At-tayyib The translator Said in the introduction: "hadith Number 168 was about making the call to prayer in the right ear of a newly born. Upon further examination 'Al-'Albani has found that it is weak, and that it is not permitted to act upon it. This I heard him say in an audio tape, where he mentions that when he was finally able to get hold of Al-Bayhaqi's Shu'ab 'Al-'lman -it was previously in manuscript form only- he found that there were two people accused of Iying in the chain of narration. Previously he thought Al-Bayhaqi's report was only weak, and not very weak because it was referenced as such on page 16 of Tuhfat Al-Wadood by'Ibn 'Al-Qayyim. A very weak hadeeth cannot be used as testimonial for a weak hadeeth, and therefore, the ruling on this hadeeth is that it is not authentic." end of quote

Also I would Like to point out that the Hadeeth that says the Ziyaadah (Addition) to call the Iqaamah on the left ear, then Al-Albaanee Calls it Maudoo'ah (Fabricated) I wanted to point this out because in an Earlier post I had Said Al-Albaanee always Declared it Da'eef. and this can be found in Silsilatul Ahaadeeth Ad-Da'eefah #321 and Al-'Irwaa' #1174.

Please spread this news to those who are not aware because I find that many Muslims still practice this Bid'ah.

And this is what Allaah Has Allowed me to bring forth regarding this issue, I ask Allaah to make us obedient to Him and to keep us away from Bid'ah, Ameen.

Jazzak Allaahu khayr akh, the issue is definitely clear now.

Now when my baby is born, bi ithnillaah, I shall proceed straight to rubbing the chewed date upon the palate of the child's mouth, inshaa' Allaah.

Barrak Allaah feek

Akhook,

Muhammad ibn Robert McWhinnie, as-Skatlandee
