Bismillaah Al-Hamdulillaah wa salatu wa salaamu 'ala rasulullaah Amma ba'd A Description of ad-Da'watus-Salafiyyah and the Da'wah of Shaikh Muhammad Ibn 'Abdul-Wahhaab, by Shaikh Ibn Baaz Shaikh 'Abdul-'Azeez ibn Baaz (rahimahullaah) said:
| quote: |
In the Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. May the prayers and peace of Allaah be upon Allaah's Messenger, and upon his family members and companions, and those who are guided with his guidance. As to what follows: Verily, the Da'wah as-Salafiyyah is the da'wah with which Allaah sent His Messenger Muhammad (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). It is the da'wah to clinging to the magnificent Qur`an and to the pure Sunnah. This is Da'wah as-Salafiyyah. It is a da'wah to traversing upon the methodology that the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) traversed upon in Makkah and then in Madinah from conveying this da'wah to the Muslims and other than them, and guiding mankind to the good, instructing them in that which Allaah sent His Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) with from Tawheed of Allaah and purity of worship for Him, and abandoning association of partners with Allaah 'Azza wa Jal, and having eeman in the Messenger Muhammad (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), and establishing that which Allaah commanded him with, and (what) His Messenger (commanded him with), and abandoning what Allaah prohibited and His Messenger prohibited. This is the da'wah as-Salafiyyah. And upon it traversed the companions of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). So the companions of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) - after his death - traversed upon this methodology and da'wah to the Tawheed of Allaah and repudiating shirk, and guiding mankind to the tawheed of Allaah in their statements and in their actions, just as Allaah has commanded them with in His, 'Azza wa Jal, statement: O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allaah). (Al-Baqarah, ayah 21) And in His (Subhana) statement: Worship Allaah and do not associate anything in worship with Him. (An-Nisa`, ayah 36) And in His, Subhana, statement: And they were not commanded except that they should worship Allaah, purely and sincerely, singling Him out in worship (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him), and to establish the Salaat and give Zakat: and that is the upright religion. (Al-Baiyinah, ayah 5) So the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) called to this. And the mushrikoon (polytheists) were infatuated with the graves and with the dead and with idols and with trees and stones, calling upon them, rubbing them, seeking blessings from them, seeking intercession with them, sacrificing for them, and making vows to them. So he (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) forbade them from that, and informed them that these things will neither benefit nor repel harm. And that it is obligatory to make worship purely for Allaah alone, and he (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: Ya Qawmee Qullu Laa illaaha il Allaah Tufleehu (O my people, say 'Laa illaaha il Allaah' (there is none deserving of worship except Allaah) to be successful. So when Allaah opened Makkah after the Hijrah, he (the Prophet, salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) smashed the idols, and he destroyed Al-'Uzza (a tree that was worshipped), and Mannat (a stone that was worshipped), and Al-Latt (a false deity that was worshipped in the city of at-Ta`if). Likewise, he (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) smashed all of the idols, and he sent emissaries to all of the tribes and all of their leaders, calling them to the Tawheed of Allaah, and commanding them to abandon the worship of idols and false deities and the awliyya` as well as the Prophets and angels.
| quote: |
So worship is a right that is exclusively for Allaah alone, because Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala said: And I (Allaah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone). (Adh-Dhariyat, ayah 56) And He Subhanahu wa Ta'aala said: And verily, We have sent among every Ummah a Messenger (proclaiming): "Worship Allaah (Alone), and avoid Taghoot (all false deities)... (An-Nahl, ayah 36) And the meaning of worship Allaah is: single out Allaah, meaning that you specify (single out) Him with your 'ibaada (worship). And He is The One Who is called upon, He is The One Who hope should be directed to, He is The One Who is asked, He is The One Who is prostrated to, and bowed to, and sacrificed for, and vowed to. As for the graves, then they are not to be worshipped. They are not to be built upon, whether it is a masjid or other than it. Nor are the inhabitants to be called upon instead of Allaah (or alongside Allaah), nor is help to be sought from them, nor should one seek intercession with them because intercession is for Allaah alone, as Allaah said: Say: "To Allaah belongs all intercession..." (Az-Zumar, ayah 44) And Allaah repudiated the mushrikoon in His, Subhanahu wa Ta'aala, statement: And they worship besides Allaah things that hurt them not, nor profit them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with Allaah."... (Yunus, ayah 18) So Allaah repudiated them with His statement: Say: "Do you inform Allaah of that which He knows not in the heavens and on the earth?" Glorified and Exalted be He above all that which they associate as partners with Him! (Yunus, ayah 18) And He Subhanahu wa Ta'aala said: ...So worship Allaah (Alone) by doing religious deeds sincerely for Allaah's sake only, (and not to show off, and not to set up rivals with Him in worship). Surely, the religion (i.e. the worship and the obedience) is for Allaah only... (Az-Zumar, ayat 2-3) Then He Subhanahu wa Ta'aala said: ...And those who take Awliyya` (protectors and helpers) besides Him (say): "We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allaah."... (Az-Zumar, ayah 3) They assume that they are drawing nearer to Allaah by their worship, so they say we do not worship them except that we may draw nearer to Allaah in station. Meaning: "We do not worship Al-Lat and 'Uzza and the Prophets and the angels, and call upon them, and seek help from them except that they may draw us nearer to Allaah in station." So Allaah repudiated that (doubt) and He refuted them in that. So He Subhanahu wa Ta'aala said: ...Verily, Allaah will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Truly, Allaah guides not him who is a liar, and a disbeliever. (Az-Zumar, ayah 3) So Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala clarified that they are liars in their statement that they draw nearer to Allaah in station, and they are disbelievers due to their worship of the idols and the angels and the Prophets. |

So it is not permissible that one comes to the inhabitant of the grave and says, "O my master such and such, help me" or "give me rain" or "satisfy my need" or "intercede for me" or "I am in your presence." All of this is munkar (evil). All of this is from the greater forms of shirk. IN his lifetime, there is no problem in this, "o such and such intercede for me," such as what the companions used to do in the lifetime of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). They would say, "intercede for us, o Messenger of Allaah [IN his lifetime]," "make du'aa for us [IN his lifetime]." So he (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) sought rain for them during the khutbat al-Jumu'ah, when they were drought-stricken, and other than it. So he would make du'aa for them. So there is no problem if it is IN his lifetime. Likewise, on Yawm al-Qiyaamah (The Day of Judgement), when Allaah will send him forth to intercede for people on Yawm al-Qiyaamah. As for after his death - in al-barzakh - then he (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) is Not to be called upon. Neither him nor other than him from amongst the Prophets nor the angels nor the righteous. They are not to be called upon besides Allaah, nor is rain to be sought from them. However, you say, "My Lord forgive me." "My Lord have mercy upon me." "My Lord, rectify my heart." "O my Lord, provide for me." "O my Lord, remove my grief." "O my Lord, make my children righteous." "O my Lord, help me against my enemies." "O my Lord, give me the intercession of your Prophet." "O my Lord, make me amongst those who receive the intercession of your Prophet, salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam." "O my Lord, give me the tawfeeq to obey you and to follow your Sharee'ah." This and other such statements should you ask your Lord. This is the correct method. This is the Salafee path, which the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) traversed upon and his companions (radiallaahu 'anhum) traversed upon, and then those who followed them in righteousness traversed upon this path after them. The companions and those after them called to this way, to clinging to the Book of Allaah and to the Sunnah of His Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and to the purity of worshipping Allaah alone so that none besides Him is called upon along with Him, whether it is an angel brought near or a Prophet sent as a Messenger or the companion of a grave. Neither Jinn nor tree nor idol, nor other than that. So 'ibaadah (worship) is a right that is exclusively for Allaah alone, as Allaah Ta'aala said: O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allaah). (Al-Baqarah, ayah 21) And Allaah said: And I (Allaah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone). (Adh-Dhariyat, ayah 56) And Allaah said: And they were not commanded except that they should worship Allaah, purely and sincerely, singling Him out in worship (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him), and to establish the Salaat and give Zakat: and that is the upright religion. (Al-Baiyinah, ayah 5) This, along with eeman and the fact that the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) is the seal of the Prophets - there is no Prophet after him. So it is a must that one have eeman in this, that you believe that Muhammad ibn 'Abdullaah ibn 'Abdul-Muttalib, al-Haashimee, al-'Araabee, al-Makkee, thumma al-Madaanee, that he is the Messenger of Allaah in truth ('alaihi asalaat wa salaam). And that he is the best of the creation. And that he is the leader of the children of Adaam. That you believe in this and that you believe that Allaah sent him to the creation in general - to jinn and to mankind. And whoever responds to his (the Prophet's) da'wah and follows that with which he (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) came, then he will enter the Jannah (Paradise). And whoever hinders men from the path of Allaah, then he will enter the fire. And he (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) is the seal of the Prophets; there is no Prophet after him. And whoever claims Prophethood after him, such as the Qadiyania, then he is a kaafir, because Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala said: Muhammad (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) is not the father of any man among you, but he is the Messenger of Allaah and the seal (last, end) of the Prophets. And Allaah is Ever All-Aware of everything. (Al-Ahzab, ayah 40) And also the hadeeth - reported in a mutaawaatir fashion - from the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) that he is the seal of the Prophets. He (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: Verily, I am the seal of the Prophets; there is no Prophet after me. Then, from the completion of ad-Da'watus-Salafiyyah is obedience to Allaah and His Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) by acting upon the commands and leaving the prohibitions, and that you pray the salat in the manner Allaah legislated, that you give zakat in the manner Allaah legislated, that you fast in the manner Allaah legislated, that you make Hajj in the manner Allaah legislated, that you be righteous to your parents, that you join the ties of kinship, that you call to Allaah with knowledge and right guidance, that you command the good and forbid the evil in a manner that is hassan (good) with kindness and wisdom. And that you leave off acts of disobedience, such as zina (adultery) and lewdness, and Ribaa (usury), and cutting the ties of kinship, and drinking intoxicants, and so on and so forth from acts of disobedience. That you leave them and beware of them out of obedience to Allaah and glorification of Allaah, and following His Sharee'ah (legislation). That you have hope in His reward, that you fear His punishment. All of this enters into ad-Da'watus-Salafiyyah.
| quote: |
As for the Shaikh Muhammad ibn 'Abdul-Wahhaab (rahimahullaah), then he was an Imam. He was a scholar ('Alim), and he called to Allaah 'Azza wa Jal. He called to this path. He (rahimahullaah) was in the town of Najd and Huraymullaah, which is from the lands of Najd. The he migrated to Onaisa. Likewise, this was a land that was close to Dir'eeyah. So he learned the knowledge and he acquired fiqh of the religion, then he traveled to the two Harams, where he learned in Makkah and Madinah. And then Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala opened the shaikh's breast to ad-Da'watus-Salafiyyah. The people of Najd were infatuated with the worship of idols and graves and trees and stones, just as had occured in many of the Muslim lands. So Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala opened the shaikh's chest to the reality of Tawheed and to ad-Da'watus-Salafiyyah upon which the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and his companions traversed. Then Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala opened the shaikh's breast to this matter, and He made him recognize the adilla (proofs, evidences) and he called to this. So he called his people and he called the people in Najd to the Tawheed of Allaah. In the town of Najd, there was the grave of Zayd ibn al-Khattab - the brother of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (radiallaahu Ta'aala 'anhu) in al-Jubayla, which was near Dir'eeyah. Zayd - his grave - was called upon and worshipped as opposed to Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala. Additionally, there were trees and stones that were worshipped - other than Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala. So Muhammad ibn 'Abdul-Wahhaab (rahimahullaah) forbade them from that and he forbade them from the infatuation or worship of the dead, and the graves and the trees, and the rocks. And he informed them that this is Shirk with Allaah 'Azza wa Jal. And he informed that Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala sent His Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) to call to the Tawheed of Allaah, and he rebuked shirk. And the companions did likewise. |
|
So the shaikh called to Allaah in the town of Najd, in Dir'eeyah first, and then he called in Huraymullah, and then he called in Onaisa, and then he migrated to Dir'eeyah. And Muhammad ibn Sa'ud - the ameer of Dir'eeyah - aided the shaikh upon that. He continued in the da'wah to the Tawheed of Allaah and the purity of worship for Him alone and following the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). And he destroyed the shrines that were built and erected upon the graves, and he cut down the trees that were worshipped, as opposed to Allaah. And he destroyed the shrine that was built upon the grave of Zayd ibn al-Khattab, and other than that from those signposts of shirk. So Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala watched over him and aided him in that. The ameer Muhammad ibn Sa'ud gave him protection and aided him in that. Likewise, the family of Sa'ud after that aided him in that, and gave protection to his progeny. May Allaah reward all of them. And they aid Tawheed up until this day of ours, calling to Allaah and aiding and assisting the people of knowledge in the da'wah to the Tawheed of Allaah and repudiating Shirk and establishing the religion of Allaah. So this is the da'wah of the shaikh Muhammad ibn 'Abdul-Wahhaab (rahimahullaah), an Imam, a scholar, the one who was Salafee in his 'aqeedah. He called to the Tawheed of Allaah and to the following of His Sharee'ah, and he forbade Shirk and bid'ah and superstitions and disobedience, just as the companions called to the Tawheed of Allaah, just as Imam Ash-Shafi'ee, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Imam Malik and other than them from the imams of Islam called to the Tawheed of Allaah and the purity of worshipping Him alone. Just as Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) in his era - seventh and eighth generations - called to the Tawheed of Allaah. Likewise, Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) and Ibn Katheer and their likes in the eighth generation called to the Tawheed of Allaah. He (rahimahullaah) was upon their methodology. He was Salafee who called to the Tawheed of Allaah and the obedience of Allaah and to the following of His Sharee'ah. As for his enemies, from those who were grave-worshippers, those who accused him of being an "innovator" or "hating the awliyah`," all of that is baatil (falsehood). It is all falsehood. These were lies (slanders) upon him, just as they lied upon the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and other than him. So he called to the Tawheed of Allaah and he called to the following of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). He called to the truth and to guidance, and he called to purity in worship for Allaah alone, and to abandoning bid'ah and superstitions, which were afflicting many of the people. He was an imam who was guided and had been given tawfeeq. He called to Allaah and he called to the Tawheed of Allaah, and he called to His obedience. He called to the Salafee 'aqeedah, and the family of Sa'ud aided him in that. And from the 'ulemma (scholars) and elite individuals, all of them were callers to the truth. As for this appellation "Wahhabi," then this was a nickname given to him by his enemies to frighten the people away from him, for he was Muhammadi, because he was Muhammad. His name was not 'Abdul-Wahhab. He is Muhammad, the son of 'Abdul-Wahhab. His father's name was 'Abdul-Wahhab. So what is correct is that it be said, "Muhammadi," because he was Muhammad, and the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) also was Muhammad, and the shaikh was from the followers of Prophet Muhammad (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). However, his enemies from amongst those who are ignorant are those who blind-follow those who are ignorant. Of those who blind-follow the enemies, they name them (the people of the Sunnah) 'Wahhabis' out of ignorance, or out of obstinance, or to scare the people away from the truth. So it is not proper for the one with sound intellect to be deceived by this nickname that the enemies have named them with, saying that they are "enemies to the religion," or "enemies to Islam," or that "they are from the people of innovations." All of this is falsehood. So those who they consider "Wahhabis," they are callers to the truth, callers to Salafiyyah, callers to that which the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) was upon and the companions were upon. Likewise, those who followed them from the Imams of Islaam. So the Shaikh Muhammad ibn 'Abdul-Wahhaab and his descendants and those who came after him up to this day of ours are callers to the Tawheed of Allaah, and they call to the following of His Sharee'ah, and to forbid shirk with Allaah, and forbid innovations for which Allaah has sent down no authority, including acts of shirk that are centered around the graves, and from taking the graves as places of worship, because these are means that lead to shirk. Likewise, the establishments of feasts and celebrations in connection with birthdays, all of these are means that lead to shirk. The Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) did not do them, nor did the companions. All good lies in following them, because Allaah 'Azza wa Jal said (what means): And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhaajiroon and the Ansaar and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allaah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success. (At-Tawbah, ayah 100) So those who follow them with Ihsaan, they are those who traverse upon their methodology, not increasing upon that nor being deficient in it. Rather, they traverse upon the methodology in the Tawheed of Allaah and the purity of worship for Him alone, and in following the Sharee'ah and having respect for it, and leaving off that which Allaah has forbidden from bid'ah, and leaving off disobedience. Calling to the Tawheed of Allaah and calling to the following of the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) in statement and in action. This is the path of the Salaf-us-saleh (from amongst the companions and those who followed them in goodness). This is the path of the Shaikh Muhammad ibn 'Abdul-Wahhaab (rahimahullaah), and it is the path of those who follow him from the family of Sa'ud and other than them from the scholars who traversed this methodology. Likewise were his followers from amongst the 'ulemma who traversed upon this methodology in India, Shaam, 'Iraaq, Egypt, and in every place. He has many followers [following him in following the Messenger, salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam] in many different countries and many different locals throughout the Muslim world. They recognize the reality, they recognize this beautiful da'wah in his books and the books of his followers, and it is a da'wah that is Salafiyyah, it is a da'wah to Allaah subhanahu wa Ta'aala and to the following of His Sharee'ah and to the following of His Prophet Muhammad (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). Therefore, my advice to every Muslim is that he fears Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala, and that he recognizes the truth by its daleel (evidences, proofs) - not by blind-following, nor by the statements of the ignorant people, nor by following the ignorant people. However, by the daleel (evidences, proofs), and that he looks into the books of the people, he looks into that which they have confirmed in the book Ad-Darar As-Sineeyah and from the book Fat-H al-Majeed, the book Kitab at-Tawheed, and in the book Tayseer al-Azeez al-Hameed and other than that from amongst their books, and the refutations they have compiled until he recognizes the reality, and he knows that they are upon the truth and upon guidance, and that they were callers to the Tawheed of Allaah and the following of His Sharee'ah, and to the abandonment to that which Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala forbade and His Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) forbade. This is the da'wah of the Shaykh Muhammad Ibn 'Abdul-Wahhaab, and this is the path of the Shaykh Muhammad Ibn 'Abdul-Wahhaab (rahimahullaah), and this is the path of those who...aided and assisted him from the scholars of Najd and other than them, from the family of Sa'ud and others. And we ask Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala that He makes all of us firm upon guidance and that He rectify the hearts of all of us in all of our actions, and that He guides those who are astray, so they are upright upon the truth. And we ask Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala that He guides those who are astray, and that He teach those who are ignorant until they recognize the truth by its evidences. And we ask Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala to guide those who are extreme and followers of desires until they abandon extremism and the following of desires so that they follow the truth, follow that which the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) came with, and follow it with the daleel (evidences, proofs from Qur`an and Sunnah) - not by blind-following the ignorant people or blind-following the people of desires. For blind-following of the ignorant people and blind-following of the people of desires harms, and does not benefit. So it is obligatory upon the student of knowledge that he takes to the truth with daleel (evidences, proofs from Qur`an and Sunnah)...until they are able to speak based upon knowledge and based upon insight and not based upon blind-following the statements of Zayd or 'Amr and the likes of them. We ask Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala for the tawfeeq and for guidance, and we ask Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'aala to rectify the affairs of the Muslims altogether and in every place. And we ask Allaah Ta'aala that He bless them to have Fiqh in the religion, and that He guide us and them to the Straight Path, and that He bless all of the Muslims with Fiqh in the religion and clinging to the book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), and stopping short of the limits and not transgressing beyond them.
