Bismillah As salamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh I need to find out if it is permissible to use medicine witch contains alcohol (like drops and tinctures and the likes),if there is no alternative ? I was suppose to use a certain medicine ,but I can't get it in any other form but in drops ,it is essential to use this medicine in order to do the treatment insha allah. It would be of great help if somebody can ask the Ulema for me or find a fatwa regarding this issue. Jazaka allahu khairan umsalayum bint werner kuhn ( Germany, Hoeheinoed)

wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh It is important to differentiate between "khamr" and "alcohol". The substance called "alcohol" is of three types: 1) That which is deadly, if you consume it you will die or become seriously ill. This is considered "summ" (poison) and it is permissible to buy, sell, transport, or use it, but not consume it. (You can use it in mouthwash, perfume, bug spray, etc, but not in foods or drinks) 2) That which intoxicates when consumed, a little of it or a lot, then it considered khamr (intoxicant), and it is not permissible to buy, sell, transport, use, or consume. The fataawaa mentioned above all refer to this category: khamr. 3) That which does not intoxicate no matter how much of it is consumed, then it is not a khamr, and it is halaal, like the small amounts of alcohol found in many foods and drinks that we eat every day. This type is permissible to buy, sell, transport, use, and consume. So if the type of alcohol used in your medicine is type #3, then you may use it. If it is #1 or #2, then no. And Allaah knows best. [I learned this point from Shaykh Muhammad Baazmool, who relays it from al-'Allaamah Al-Albaanee, may Allaah have Mercy on them both.] Moosaa ibn John Richardson ******************** سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك أشهد أن لا إله إلا أنت أستغفرك وأتوب إليك

Bismillahirahmaniraheem, Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmattullah ya Moosa, Can you please inform us where is the text or when at what lecture and/or in what instance was it that this was the view of Sheikh Al-Albanee(rahimahullah). You noted that Sheikh Baazmool said it was can you ask him when Albanee's view changed and when did he give this as his view because in Sheikh Al-Albanee's book At-tasfiyah wa tarbiyah he does mention two types of alcohol but said that Imam Abu Haneefah made ijtihaad and said this.(see pp.33-39 tasfiyah and tarbiyah for specifics regarding this). So inshaAllah just would like to know when his (Albanee's) view changed because in the book it is very clear he repeats it'"that which intoxicates in large amounts, is forbidden in small amounts". Please clarify, barakaAllahu Feekum. wa assalam

wa 'alaykumus-salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh 'Abdal-Hafidh - I don't know of a book or tape of Shaykh al-Albaanee covering this topic. This is the narration of Muhammad Baazmool from him. When you referred to the "two types of alcohol" (you mean khamr I believe) according to Aboo Haneefah, I assume you are referring to a completely different issue - intoxicant beverages made from grapes vs. those made from other than grapes... Anyway - Again I stress the need to differentiate between the words khamr and alcohol, as not every kind of alcohol is a khamr, as explained previously. Assalaamualaykum Is it permissable to use a fabric cleaner containing alcohol to clean prayer mats? From what is written above it seems alcohol is not a physical impurity and so this is ok, but I would like someone to double check this for me please. Jazaakumullahu Khayr Thani-Ithnain
