Shaykh Saleh Al-Luhayan, Chief Justice of the High Judiciary Council of Saudi Arabia said regarding the beginning of Muharram and the day of Ashuraa: ??وشهر محرم هذا العام لم يثبت دخوله يوم الاثنين المتمم للثلاثين من ذي الحجة ولذا فان أول الشهر يوم الثلاثاء فيكون يوم الخميس هو يوم عاشوراء وحسن أن يصام الاربعاء وهو التاسع والخميس فيكون حصل صيام يوم عاشوراء بيقين" ??and this year the beginning of the month of Muharram was not established by sighting the moon on Sunday night (29th Jan. ?06), so Monday completed thirty days of Dhul-Hijjah. On that basis Tuesday (31st Jan. ?06) was the first day of Muharram and so Thursday (9thFeb. ?06) will be the day of Ashuraa.
