as-salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu:

Abu Hurairah (radi'Allahu anhu) reported that Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: One who makes efforts (for earning to be spent) on a widow and the destitute is like a striver in the cause of Allaah, and I think he also said: He is like one who constantly stands for prayer and observes fast without breaking it.

Abu Hurairah (radi Allah anhu) reported that Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: One who looks after the orphan whether he is his relative or not, I and he would be together in Paradise like this, and Malik (explained it) with the gesture by drawing his index finger and middle finger close together.

[Sahih Muslim (The Book of Abstinence and Heart-Melting Narrations) Hadeeth Nos 7107 and 7108]

In light of the aformentioned ahadeeth, what are the methods and strategies for supporting and helping the widows and orphans that take place in the Muslim Countries? Do we have anything similar in USA? Do these individuals receive continual donations, Zakat, maintenance etc?  How are they taken care of?  What is our obligation towards them?  When is an orphan no longer considered an orphan?

I appreciate any information pertinent to my questions.  Jazaakum Allahu khairan.
