From the Sharh of Masaail ul Jaahiliyah of Shiakh ul Islaam Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhaab, by Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan.

quote:

So, that which is clear is that all the affairs of jaahilliyah are blameworthy and we have been prohibited from resembling the people of jaahilliyah in all aspects. And jaahilliyah in general came to an end with the sending of the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam)  and knowledge and Imaan came, and the Qur'aan and Sunnah were revealed, so knowledge became widespread and ignorance was obliterated. And as long as the Qur'aan and the statements of the people of knowledge are present, then jahilliyah in general ceases to exist. As for certain aspects which remain in some people, tribes or countries, then this partial jaahilliyah can be seen to exist. And due to this when the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam)  heard a man insulting his brother by saying ? O son of a black woman,? He said, ?Do you insult him because of his mother? Verily you are a man who has some aspects of jaahilliyah.? ( Muslim no.1850)

And he (sallallaahualaihi wasallam)  said, ?These are four matters in my Ummah which they will not abandon and they are from the affairs of jaahilliyah; They are: defaming the lineage of others, taking pride in ancestors, wailing over the dead and believing that rain is caused by  the influence of stars.? (al-Bukhaaree no. 3850, and Muslim no. 934)

This indicates that some aspects of jaahilliyah will remain in some people and the fact that they are blameworthy. However we do not declare a person to be a disbeliever on account of them. But jaahilliyah, in general, has ceased and all praise is due to Allaah.

And thus it is not permissible to say that the people are in jaahiliyyah or the whole world is in jahilliyah, because this contains a denial of the messengership and denial of the Qur?aan and the Sunnah. This generalization is not permissible. As for the saying that there is jaahilliyah in some people or there are particular characteristics of jaahilliyah - then this is a reality, since there is a difference between the state of affairs before sending of the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam)  and after.
