Partisanship to a Scholar or a Da'ee

Question:What is the ruling of an individual who loves a scholar or a Da'ee and says: I love him very much, I do not want to listen to anyone refuting him and I take his word even if it goes against the evidence, because the shaykh has more knowledge of the evidence than us?
Answer:This is detestable and blameworthy partisanship and it is not allowed. We love the scholars-and all praise is to Allaah-and we love the Du'aat (callers) for the sake of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. However if one from amongst them makes an error in an issue, we make clear the truth in that issue with the evidence and this does not decrease our love for the one who is refuted nor does it decrease his status. Imaam Maalik-rahimahullaah- said: "There is no one from amongst us except that he will refute or be refuted, except the companion of this grave." Meaning the Messenger of Allaah SAllaahu Alihee Wasallam.
If we refute some of the people of knowledge and some of the people of virtue, this does not mean that we hate him or dispraise him, we only make clear what is correct and for this reason some of the scholars, when some of their colleagues made an error, said: "So and so is beloved to us, however the truth is more beloved to us than him. " And this is the correct way.
Do not understand from this that to refute some of the scholars in an issue where they have erred in, means lowering them or having hatred for them. Rather the scholars have not ceased refuting each other and at the same time being brothers and having mutual love. It is not allowed for us to take everything that an individual says unquestionably, whether he is correct or in error, because this is partisanship.
The one whose statement is taken absolutely and nothing from it is left, is the Messenger of Allaah Sallaahu ıAlihee Wasallam. Because he is a Messenger from his Lord and does not speak from his desires. As for other than them (messengers), then sometimes they make errors and sometimes they are correct, even though they may be from the best of the people, they are Mujtahidoon that make mistakes at times and are correct at others. No one is infallible from falling into error except the Messenger of Allaah Sallaahu Alihee Wasallam. It is therefore Waajib that we know this and that we do not remain silent upon error, due to love of an individual. Rather it is upon us that we make the error clear. The Prophet Sallaahu ıAlihee Wasallam said: "The religion is sincere advice. We said: To whom. He said: To Allaah, His book, His messenger, the leaders of the Muslims and their general people."
So clarification of an error is advice for all, as for concealing it, then this goes against advice.

Specifying Specific Scholars as Reference Points in the Correction of Affairs is a Form of Hizbiyyah
Question: Is it permissible for us to make a specific Salafi Shaykh from those who know our problems as a reference point for ourselves in order to solve our disputes of methodology in our centre [i.e. in the running and organisation of affairs] specifically, such that no deception can occur in the questions (put to him)?
Shaykh Rabee' bin Haadee: There is splitting and partisanship (tahazzub) contained in this. And we have seen some people showing partisanship to the people of Shaam, and other people showing partisanship to the people of Riyaadh and others showing partisanship to the people of Yemen. So all of this is splitting and partisanship. However, make all of the Mashaayikh, together to be in front of you.
For they are your brothers, your fathers, your beloved ones, and your true friends. And because this distinction and this separation (i.e. of specifying specific people) was not known, except [now] in these days. And some attempts have begun now to specify so and so and so and so to solve the problems, and we have rejected this, since these manifestations of haughtiness have come to us from America, with every group wanting to specify a specific Shaykh for itself. This is partisanship. So consider yourselves in the whole world as a single Jamaa'ah, and consider the Shaykhs in the world as a whole, as one brotherhood, and leave aside this nationalism, and these things that separate and split.
This is because the Mashaayikh, amongst them are those who are lenient (mutasaahil), and those who are upright and balanced, and those who are severe, this is how it is. So if you were to be eager for the one who is severe, he will deprive you, and if you were to be eager for the one who is lenient, he will deprive you. Hence, count all the Mashaayikh, may Allaah bless you, so that you benefit from this one and from that one, may Allaah bless you. And prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad.

Fanaticism to Individuals in Spite of Error
54] Question: Some people, may Allaah guide them, sanctify certain individuals and fanatically cling to their views. What is your advice to them?
Answer: It is obligatory to follow the truth whoever it is with, and not to follow individuals that oppose the truth.
Imaam Ahmad, may Allaah have mercy on him, said: I am amazed by a people who know the chain of narration (of a hadeeth) and its authenticity, yet they go by the opinion of Sufyaan.
And Allaah, the Most high, says: So let those who oppose his Command (i.e. Sunnah) be warned, lest some fitnah (trial) should befall them or a painful punishment be inflicted on them. [Surah An-Noor: 63]
Ibn Abbaas (radyAllaahu anhu) said: It is imminent that rocks will descend upon you from the heavens I say Allah said and you say Abu Bakr and Umar said.
So if this warning and threat is with regard to following the most virtuous of people after the prophets without proof, then how much more so for following one who is neither here nor there (i.e. a nobody), such as those who are not known to have knowledge or virtue but yet are proficient in rambling speech?

Shaykh Muhammad Al Imaam: From altering the din is the following of 1 scholar only

"From alteration of the religion is the following of one scholar (only) and dissociation from the other scholars of adherence to the prophetic methodology"
Verily, Allah has commanded, with His legislation and in the guidance of His Messenger every individual who isn't a scholar to refer their affairs back to the scholars of Islam.

"So ask Ahli-dhikr if you don't know." [An- Nahl:43]

"If only they had referred it to the Messenger or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have understood it from them." [An Nisa:83]
Therefore consulting the scholars of the Book and the Sunnah both past and present is a legislative requirement. So whoever is content with referring back to one scholar regardless if he's from those who have preceded us or someone contemporary then indeed he has altered what Allah has made obligatory upon him. Also he has wronged the other scholars in that there is no acceptance of what they say with him.
Furthermore, he has fell into exaggeration with that particular scholar in that he has raised him to the level of the Prophet ıııı ıııııı ı ıııııı. This is due to the fact that it's well known that no one from the creation is followed with absolute adherence except the Messenger of Allah ıııı ıııııı ı ıııııı.
The scholar of Islam Ibn Taimiyyah said: "In contrary to those who follow a particular scholar they are those who congregate upon a mistake. In fact, every statement they make that wasn't stated by other than them from amongst the imaams can not be anything except a mistake. Verily, the religion in which Allah sent His Messenger with has not been handed over to one scholar and those that follow him. If that were the case then this individual would be equal to the Messenger and would resemble the claims of the shia regarding their infallible imaam."
