Bismi'llaah wal hamdu lilaah was-salaatu wa salaam 'ala Rasulilaah wa ba'd:

as-Salaamu 'Alaikum

Dear brothers and sisters in Salafiyyah,

During his khutbah this past Jumuah one of the Pakistani brothers stated very forcefully, "WORLDLY TALK IS NOT ALLOWED IN THE MASJID!"

If my memory is correct, It seems as though I recall someone (Dawud Adib I think) saying that some of the Salaf would hold worldly conversations in the masjid in the presence of Rasulullaah  صل الله عليه و سلم (without him objecting), discussing how they used to chase women and drink wine in the days of jahiliyyah.  If anyone knows where to find the evidence for this can you please post it here insha'Allaah? (Feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken or my memory is faulty.)

Also, if anyone is familiar with those people who condemn all "worldy talk" in the masjid, can you please explain to me what they are using as their basis for this prohibition since they themselves don't seem to really know???

Barak Allaahu Feekum

Question: Is it permissible to talk about worldly matters inside the masjid and at a time other than the salaat?

Answer: All praise is due to Allaah. It is not permissible to take the masaajid as places of selling, trading, and their like from the worldly affairs, in which the voices are raised. Because the masaajid... they were built for the remembrance of Allaah, recitation of the Qur?aan and making of the salaat, in them.  But it is permissible to speak a little about worldly matters as long as it does not distract the reciters (of the Qur?aan) or the one?s making the salaat.  And with Allaah is all tawfeeq. And may the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon our Prophet Muhammad and on his family and on his companions.

As-Salaamu alaykoom

I've heard what you're saying before. A few years ago, one brother after looking for me for a couple days, finally caught up with me in the Masjid.  He wanted to know if they were still taking applications at my place of work or something of that nature.  Upon which, a Tableeghee told him that he should take this outside the Masjid and his talk was Haraam.  I thought that comment was a bit extreme.  AllahuAlim.  Al-humdulillah, you asked a good question.  Maybe we can both get some benefit out of your post, because I have been wondering about this issue since that incident.

your brother,

Abu Haneefah
