  As salaamu 'alaykum,

Bismillah,

Here is an exam from the University of Umm al-Quraa's Department of Islamic Law (Jurisprudence). This exam was given on November 22, 2008. It is from a class called, Fiqh Rulings from the Qur'an. The book that is studied in this class is called Fiqh Rulings from the Qur'an; its author is Ibn al-'Arabee [d.543H]. The questions have been translated into English so that everyone may benefit.

[1] - From the names of The Fatihah is "The Mother of the Book (Umm al-
        Kitaab)",why was it named that?

[2] - What are the different ways in which seeking refuge from the Shaytaan can
be said before reading the Qur'an?

[3] - Explain the translated statement of Allah, the Most High, and "All praise and
        thanks belong to Allah" [Fatihah:2]

[4] - Allah, the Most High, says in a translation of its meaning, " All the praise
and thanks be to Allah the Lord of mankind, jinn and all that exists"
[Fatihah: 2]. What is the meaning of the Lord?

[5] - What is the reason of revelation for the translated statement of Allah, the Most High, "
And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal reaches its place of
        sacrifice." [al-Baqarah: 196]

[6] - What is the meaning of the translated statement of Allah, the Most High, "for Allah" in
the verse, "And complete Hajj and 'Umrah for Allah" [al-Baqarah; 196]

[7] - What is the ruling for reading The Fatihah while being lead in prayer. In
other words, do you have to read it? Or is the Imam's recital of the Fatihah
        sufficient for you?

[8] - Mention some statements from the scholars of Islam pertaining to Allah, the
Most High's, translated statement, "what is easy for you from the sacrificial animals"
        [al-Baqarah: 196]

[9] - What are the different types of Hajj rituals and which one is the best?
Mention proof for what you have said.

Please feel free to post all answers! Tafsir Ibn Katheer is translated into English, maybe some of the answers can be found there.

May Allah, the Most High, grant us understanding of his religion.

Salamu Alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh

I heard from some of the students in Madinah that the first year in the Shubah  program they memorize from Juz Amma, And when they enter the Kulliyah they start from Surah Baqarah and the last year finish Surah Tawbah. Is it the same at umm Al-Qurra also?

Jazakallu Khair

  As salaamu 'alaykum,

Bismillah,

The students in the College of Sharee'ah must memorize the last four parts of the Qur'an. I'm not sure about the other departments.

May Allah reward you.

[1] - From the names of The Fatihah is "The Mother of the Book (Umm al-
        Kitaab)",why was it named that?

[1] - It is called Umm Al-Kitab, because the Qur'an starts with it and the prayer is started by reciting.
Futher, Imam Ahmed recorded that Abu Hurayrah narrated about Umm Al -Qur'an   that the Prophet said,
(( It is Umm Al-Qur'an, the seven reapeated [verses]and the Glourious Qur'an.))[3]
