This question - about two months ago or less - was posed to me by some of the cabdrivers here in Asbury Park, New Jersey. I passed it off to one of our brothers who is a student in one of the Islaamic Universities, but does not have a lot of time to get the correct answer. If there is anyone among the students that can ask one of the mashaayikh the answer to this, then please get back to me as soon as possible.

The question is: Does a cabdriver have to pay zakaah on the cab medallion? The cab medallion is an actualy metal medallion (in New York) seen on the front hood of the cab that enables the driver to have fares, go places etc. that a non medallion cab can not.

It is purchased by the owner of the company then leased or rented or purchased by the driver himself and rented or leased to other drivers for a fee.

Here in the small town of Asbury Park it cost upwards to $65,000 in New York it can be $250,000 or more!
