Supplication is of Four Types, a benefit given by Al-'Allaamah Zaid ibn Muhammad al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullaah) in his explanation of Four Principles

Supplication is of Four Types:

1- When the person supplicates for himself
2- When the person supplicates for other than himself
3- When the person supplicates for himself and others with a plural pronoun
4- When the person supplicates for himself and others, so he begins with himself and then moves onto others.

It is from this angle that the supplications have occurred in the aayaat of the Noble Qur`aan. From them is the statement of Allaah, the Exalted:
quote:

ıııııııı ııııııı ııııı ıııııııııııııııı ııııııııı ıııııııııı ıııııııııııı

And those who came after them say: "Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith."
[Sooratul-Hashr 59:10]

So it is not from the manners of supplication that the person supplicates for others and then he supplicates for himself. Due to this, the scholars took issue with Ibnus-Salaah  (d. 643 H) when he said in his Muqaddimah, "Know - may Allaah teach you and us." So it would have been befitting to say: May Allaah teach me and you. Refer to Mu'jamul-Manaahee al-Lafdhiyyah (p. 108).

Subhanak Allaahuma wa bihamdika ash-hadu anlaa illaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk

If I said anything correct, then it is from Allaah (subhanahu wa taa'ala), and if I erred, then that is from me and shaytan.
