  Sheikh Ubayd al-Jaabiree said last Friday in the sermon that the 9th day of Muharram will fall on Sunday 28th January 2007 and 10th day of Muharam (Ashoora) will fall on Monday 29th January 2007. That it is best to fast both of these days based upon the saying of the Messenger sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam that if he lived till the next year then he would fast the 9th along with the 10th. (Saheeh Muslim no.1134)

So it is preferable to fast the 9th and 10th which or just the 10th day of Muharam if one wishes to follow the sunnah of the Messenger sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam.

Sheikh Sulaiman al-Ruhaili (before starting his dars this week in the haram in Madinah kitab Fitn from Saheeh Muslim) advised that it is not from the sunnah to specify this day with buying gifts for one's children nor cook special food for it. Rather this is an innovated practice of some Muslims who tried to oppose the innovated extreme practice of the Rafida (extreme shiah sect) who beat themselves with chains showing sorrow for the killing of Hussein ibn Ali radiallaahu 'anhuma in the year 61h when he was martyred. [see p.261 al-A'yaad Dr. Sulaiman as-Suhaimi] See also Majmu' Fataawa 25/307 Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah.

قال تعالى:{إنا نحن نزلنا الذكر وإنا له لحافظون}
