Question:

I am now 29 years old, I started praying when I was 24 years old; and I have not ceased to, all praises being to ALLAH and I thank HIM, to be upon this guidance(ie: praying) So it occurred to me that I should make up the prayers that I missed since I was fifteen, as much as I am able to do. But the people have differed concerning this, so some say that it is not upon me to make up those prayers and that tawba(repentence) is enough and others say that I have to make up all those prayers that I missed. So I wish for you to clarify the issue.

Answer:

What is correct is that it is not upon you to make up your prayers and a sincere repentence will be enough. This should include, feeling sorry for what occurred, being firm in making your prayers, and a firm resolution to not return to leaving off the prayer. ALLAH the mighty and masjestic says, "Say to the disbelievers, if you cease(to disbelieve) you shall be pardoned for what you have done."(surah 8:38) And HE says, "And repent to ALLAH all together oh you believers so that you may be successful." (surah 24:31) and, "Oh you who believe turn to ALLAH with a sincere repentance".(surah 66:8) And the Messenger of ALLAH, peace and blessing be upon him, said "Islaam wipes out what came before it and repentance wipes out what came before it." (Muslim, book of Imaan) and He, peace and blessing upon him said, "The one who repents from sins is like the one who does not have any sin." (ibn Majah) And the hadith with this meaning are numerous.
