  As-Salaamu 'Alaykum,

Bismillah,

Imaam Ibn Balbaan (1) [d. 1083 AH] said: "...It is obligatory to fast Ramadhaan when the Moon
(al-Hilal) is sighted..."

Ibn Badraan (2) [d. 1346 AH] said in his footnotes of this sentence: "The Arabs use the word
al-Hilaal to describe the Moon in its first, second and third nights. After that, it is called
al-Qamar. [ Additionally, when the Moon is full, it is called al-Badr ]." (3) / (4)

Quick Summary:

The Moon goes through phases in Arabic:

1. al-Hilaal: first, second and third nights

2. al-Badr: the full moon

3. al-Qamar: after the first, second, and third nights

And Allah knows best.

Your brother is Islaam and the Sunnah,

Jameel Finch
