Al-'Allaamah Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have Mercy on him) said:

quote:
"...The scholars of the taabi'oon (students of the Companions) capable of giving fatwaa (religious verdicts) in al-Madeenah were:

[1] Sa'eed ibn al-Musayyab
[2] 'Urwah ibn az-Zubayr [ibn al-'Awwaam]
[3] Al-Qaasim ibn Muhammad [ibn Abee Bakr as-Siddeeq]
[4] Khaarijah ibn Zayd [ibn Thaabit]
[5] Aboo Bakr ibn 'Abdir-Rahmaan ibn al-Haarith ibn Hishaam (*)
[6] Sulaymaan ibn Yasaar [al-Hilaalee, the freed slave of Maymoonah]
[7] 'Ubaydullaah ibn 'Abdillaah ibn 'Utbah ibn Mas'ood

These were the "seven fuqahaa'" (scholars capable of fatwaa)..."

NOTE: What is between brackets [like this] has been added for clarity.

(*) Some scholars considered Saalim, the son of 'Abdullaah ibn 'Umar, to be from them, instead of Aboo Bakr.  Others put Aboo Salamah ibn 'Abdir-Rahmaan ibn 'Awf in this place.

There were many other scholars in al-Madeenah.  These were the most outstanding of them.  Imaam Maalik, the great scholar of al-Madeenah (may Allaah have Mercy on him), gave their positions and verdicts great weight in his own research and rulings.  They were, after all, great scholars of the taabi'oon, AND children of famous Companions (most of them).

And Allaah knows best.
