Assalamu 'Alaikum wa Rahmatulaahi wa Barakaatuhu

My friend told me today that she remembered a hadith where rasouloullah salallahu alayhi wasalam had woken up to ask 'Aa'ishah radiallahu anha whether there was any food in the home, to which she replied no and then he made the intention to fast the remainder of the day.

Has anyone come across this hadith and do you know whether it is saheeh or not?

  As Salaamu 'Alaykum,

Bismillah:

[1] - Al-Imaam al-Hajjaawi [d. AH 968] said, A voluntary fast is correct even if the intention for it
is made during the day." [Zaad al-Mustaqn'i - pg.105]

[2] - The hadeeth you are referring to is in Saheeh Muslim:

'Aaisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said, "The Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace upon
him, entered the house one day and said, 'Do we have any food?' So those who were present
said, 'No.' So he, prayers and peace upon him, said, 'If that's the case, I'm going to fast.' "
[Muslim w/an-Nawawi - 8/2708]

[3]- Al-Imam an-Nawaai said, "The majority of scholars use this hadeeth to show that it is
permissible to intend a voluntary fast during the day before the afternoon prayer". [Muslim
w/an-Nawawi - 8/pg. 276]

[4] - Hadeeth that are in Saheeh Muslim are authentic.

And Allah knows best. I hope this helped.

Your brother in Islam,

Jameel Finch al-Makki
