Innalhamdulillaah wa salaatu wa salaamu ala arasoolullaahi, salallaahu alayhe wa ala alihe wa sahbihe wa sallam, wa ba'ad:

What is our understanding of dua'a in relation to the Qadr?  Specifically the point I am looking for will allow some clarity to those whom ask "Why do we make dua'a if it has already been determined what our position will be in this life and in the hereafter?", wa 'iyathoubillah from asking too many questions.  I remember this being explained some time ago but I am not able to recall the full details of the explanation and since "a reminder benefits the believers" I would like to be reminded of the details regarding this subject matter. Jazakumallaah fee kulli khairun, ameen!

Wa Barakallaahu Feekum, Ameen.

as-salaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullaah

I couldn't find anything that specifically mentions the aspect of making Dua'a in relation to al-Qadar, but hopefully this adds a little bit of clarity and is a reminder for us not to use al-Qadar (in general) as an excuse.

Allaah knows best!

From the book Sharh Al-Aqeedat-il-Wasitiyah, Chapter: Belief in Qadar
Published by Darussalam with English Translation Pages 187-188

quote:
If you wish to know how these acts which are carried out by His slaves form part of the fate and how they include the Will of Allaah, then the answer is that these acts that take place by the slaves whether good or bad come into being by their power and freedom which everyone admits.  Now the question is who created their power, intention and will?  The answer is: The One Whom everyone accepts, that is Allaah.  He created the power and the intention.  One who created that thing, which carried out the acts, He has created the acts also.  This removes the ambiguity and it becomes possible for the slave to understand deeply the intergration of fate, decision and power.  Along with this Allaah has bestowed upon the believers the resources, the means and various favours and rewards and removed the obstacles as the Prophet Õá Çááå Úáíå æ Óáã has said:

quote:
"Whoever is from amongst the blessed, he is provided with
facilities for doing the work of the blessed."  (al-Bukhari)

From the Book of Emaan by Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah)
Chapter Faith in al-Qadaa' wal Qadar:

quote:
Allaah created all creation, all that they possess of attributes and all their actions, but they have a will of their own and they act accordingly.  The 'servant' is the believer, the disbeliever, the pious, the sinner, the worshipper and the fasting person.  The servants have ability to fulfil their actions and they have a will, but Allaah created them and their ability and will...

Disbelievers use al-Qadar as an Excuse

Polytheists have tried to use al-Qadar of Allaah, and His Will as an excuse for their disbelief.  They claimed that if Allaah has not Willed for them polytheism, they would not commit it.  However, Allaah has invalidated their excuse by saying:

  Al-An'am (6):148-149
ÓóíóÞõæáõ ÇáøóÐöíäó ÃóÔúÑóßõæÇú áóæú ÔóÇÁ Çááøåõ ãóÇ ÃóÔúÑóßúäóÇ æóáÇó ÂÈóÇÄõäóÇ æóáÇó ÍóÑøóãúäóÇ ãöä ÔóíúÁò ßóÐóáößó ßóÐøóÈó ÇáøóÐöíäó ãöä ÞóÈúáöåöã ÍóÊøóì ÐóÇÞõæÇú ÈóÃúÓóäóÇ Þõáú åóáú ÚöäÏóßõã ãøöäú Úöáúãò ÝóÊõÎúÑöÌõæåõ áóäóÇ Åöä ÊóÊøóÈöÚõæäó ÅöáÇøó ÇáÙøóäøó æóÅöäú ÃóäÊõãú ÅóáÇøó ÊóÎúÑõÕõæäó  ¤  Þõáú Ýóáöáøåö ÇáúÍõÌøóÉõ ÇáúÈóÇáöÛóÉõ Ýóáóæú ÔóÇÁ áóåóÏóÇßõãú ÃóÌúãóÚöíäó  ¤

Those who took partners (in worship) with Allâh will say: "If Allâh had willed, we would not have taken partners (in worship) with Him, nor would our fathers, and we would not have forbidden anything (against His Will)." Likewise belied those who were before them, (they argued falsely with Allâh's Messengers), till they tasted of Our Wrath. Say: "Have you any knowledge (proof) that you can produce before us? Verily, you follow nothing but guess and you do nothing but lie." Say: "With Allâh is the perfect proof and argument, (i.e. the Oneness of Allâh, the sending of His Messengers and His Holy Books, etc. to mankind), had He so willed, He would indeed have guided you all."

This is the reply of Allaah to anyone who argues about His Qadar in disobeying Him, and with Allaah is the perfect proof and argument.
