Assalaamu Allaykum,
From the book by Shayk Saalih Al-Fawzaan (May Allah preserve him),
?عقيدة التوحيد و بيان ما يضاد ها أو ينقصها من الشرك الاكبر و الاصغر و التعطيل و البدع و غير ذالك?
The Shayk states in the book (p. 56):
?And some of the salaf used to say, ?whoever worships Allah with love (با لحب) alone than he is a zindeeq, and whoever worships Him with hope (با لرجاء) alone, than he is a murji?, and whoever worships Him with fear (با لخوف) alone, than he is huroori (حروري)، and whoever worships Him with love, fear, and hope, than he is a believer and a muwahid??.
*note: Hurooriyyah are a sect from the khawaarij

As-Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuhu, and in another narration we find the following from the Sheikh [hafidhahullaah]:
And Ahlus Sunnati wal Jamaa'ah-and for Allaah is the praise-are upon the Wast [middle course] they gather between the texts of Wa'eed and the text of Wa'd and they gather between Al-Khauf [fear] and Rajaa [hope] and they do not restrict themselves to hope alone as the Murji'ah do nor do they restrict themsleves to the Khauf [fear] alone as the Khawaarij do. So the one who worships Allaah upon fear only then he is Khaarijee and whoever worships Allaah upon hope alone then he is Murji'ee and whoever worships Allaah upon Hubb [reverencial love] alone is a Soofee and whoever worships Allaah upon Khauf [fear] and Rajaa [reverencial hope] and Hubb [reverencial love] and Raghbah [reverencial desire] and Rahbah [reverencial fear] then he is Muwahhid Sunnee [one who has established Tawheed and the Sunnah] and this is the explanation of this great matter in detail.
فمن كان يريد حقا الرجوع الى الكتاب والسنة, فليزمه الرجوع الى ما كان عليه أصحاب النبي عليه السلام و التابعين و أتباعهم من بعدهم

QUESTION:
How do we combine between Fear and Hope in worship?
ANSWER:
The two are combined, just as Allaah (subhaanah) said:
??They invoke their Lord in Fear and Hope?? (32:16)
So Allaah (subhaanah) mentioned that they combine the two, by fearing His punishment and Hoping for His Reward.
As for the one who has Fear only, then he is a khaarijee. And the one who has Hope only, then he is a murji.
As for the one who combines Fear and Hope, then he is a believer, and this is Tawheed.
Allaah (subhaanah) said:
??Verily, they used to hasten on to do good deeds??- that is the Prophets (alayhimus salaatu was-salaam)
??And they used to call on Us with Hope and Fear?? (21:90)
Having Hope in performing good and having Fear of Evil. So they combined the two affairs, and one aspect is not to be taken and the other abandoned. The soofiyyah establish the aspect of Love and abandon the aspect of Fear and Hope.
