According the ulamaa of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa?ah the general meaning of  a taaghoot is anyone who arrogates to himself a place that is befitting only for Allaah, and so is worshipped instead of Him, either by forcing others to worship him or by accepting their willing worship. The one that is as a result worshipped may be a human being, or a shaytaan, or a statue/idol, or some other being.

In the July 5, issue of ESPN The Magazine with regard to Michael Jordan?s visit to China to promote his ?gospel? i.e. selling sneakers:

quote:
The fans outside his Hong Kong hotel room held signs that read "God=Mr. 23" and "No Mike, no Life" and "Bless Us, Flying One".

as-salaamu 'alaikum

also, right here in the USA people use to hold signs at his games that read:

quote:

"On the Seventh Day God created Michael"

unfortunately you never hear of him (or other than him among the kuffaar) preventing or even discouraging the people from committing these open displays of shirk. so their silence is the same as their accepting this worship. If 'Isa ('alaihi as-Salaam) will be questioned about those who worshipped him without his knowledge, how much more for those who allow others to worship them KNOWINGLY!
