As salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh ya ikhwaan wa akhawaat,

To take the children and the youth away from haraam means of entertainment/recreation like TV, movies, etc. we should provide them with halaal alternatives. Here is a short list of halaal entertainment and recreational activities that I can think of as of now for youth and adults. Please add on to these and let me know in case I've made a mistake with anyone of these. Note these are just recreational activities and none of these should be done in excess and particularly not at the expense of spending time in ibaadah or to divert attention from studies or work. Note that learning Arabic and attending duroos and doing dawah are not included since they are acts of ibaadah and not entertainment/recreation per se.

1. Wrestling, Swimming, horse-riding, archery and other outdoor sports and games.
2. Halaal Indoor games and sports like playing with dolls for girls, etc.
3. Walking, athletics, exercise.
4. Spending time with immediate family, friends and relatives. Visiting them, talking to them over phone, exchanging emails, etc. but care should be taken that conversations shouldn't lead to haraam acts like gheebah, etc. Playing with kids, etc.
5. Gardening/Landscaping
6. Shopping without extravagance and being away from places of fitnah.
7. Cooking, crafts,
8. Reading beneficial books.
9. Sleeping/siesta.
10. Learning additional skills like car mechanics, carpentry, plumbing, or learning new languages.
11. Organizing and going to get-togethers, parties, feasts, etc. Care should be taken that there are no haraam activities at these events.
12. Writing or reading halaal poetry that is free from immoral and useless talk.
13. Art/handicraft
14. Astronomy and looking at the creation of Allaah stars, moon, constellations, etc.
15. Animal breeding
16. Bird watching
17. Looking at trees, flowers, gardens, etc.
18. Do it yourself(DIY) projects
19. Fishing
20. Hunting if it is legal in ur country and if it is done in an Islaamically permissible way.
21. Calligraphy
22. Home/Interior decoration. Helping with such activities at ur Masjid also.
23. Model building
24. Painting/drawing/photography of inanimate objects and sceneries without extravagance.
25. Solving crosswords, puzzles
26. writing blogs, maintaining journals or diary. Here again the words written should not be haraam.
27. Going to beaches, rivers, lakes, etc. if there is no fitnah.
28. Field trips and camping. Taking care not to put oneself in danger.
29. Trekking.Taking care not to put oneself in danger

We should always seek refuge with Allaah from laziness and procrastination and spend time in beneficial acts rather than permissible acts and stay away from one of the many traps of Shaytaan. Wallaahu aalam.

As salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaah

Brother, I love you for the sake of Allaah but you have to remove 'sleep' as a form of recreation/entertainment.. lol..

Making a halal list like this is perhaps not how I would proceed with in order to establish halal forms of recreation but in a way I guess it may remind people about things one can do with ones kids or companions.

It is interesting actually with regards to the hadith talking about the four things one can do in ones spare time (all other being a waste of time or 'heedless') and whether it makes all other actions unrecommended in a complete sense or whether a more general understanding of everything that is from the dunya issues are halal except that which has been made haraam by way of text.

It would be interesting to see what the tulaab could help us find with regards to this issue and perhaps a good explanation of the ahadeeth that speak about these things.

(such as..)

The Prophet (sallallahualaihi-wassalam)
Any action without the remembrance of Allah is either a diversion or heedlessness excepting four acts: Walking from target to target [during archery practice], training a horse, playing with ones family, and learning to swim. (Reported by Tabarani)

As salaamu alaikum
Lougain
