Salaamu Ailaykum, I saw a brother with an ankh on and told him about the hadith where the Prophet (Salallaahu Alayhi wa Salam) refused to give someone the shahada because he was wearing one. I can't find it in my books. Does anyone have it. Jazakallaahu Khair. Barakallaahu Feekum, Daud As-Salafi

as salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah an ankh is a cross like symbol where the top is circular... it is an ancient egyptian symbol... its meaning i am not sure of i think it represents a fertitlity god(wa iyaadhubillah) many african american groups who wish to adopt an ancient african religion adopt this symbol along with a lot of hodgepodge of mismatched african religious beliefs and symbols(i.e doctor york etc) and wear it as jewelry and pendants hope this helped

Salaam 'alaykum wa Rahmatullaah, Basically, the ankh is an ancient Egyptian religious symbol from the Pharoanic era. The symbol itself represents life, and it (life) being a gift from the gods, with the gods and the pharoah (king) having power to grant or take away this life. The shape of the ankh itself is similar to the cross of the Christians except that top portion is circular and similar in shape to an upside down egg. The ankh is a symbol of kufr and shirk from a deen that opposes the deen of Allaah. By the way akhee Daud, do you mean this hadeeth of Uqbah (radi'allaahu anhu)?:
| quote: |
Uqbah ibn 'Aamir (radi'allaahu anhu) reported, "that once a group of men approached Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi was sallam) to give their allegiance to him, and he accepted the oath from nine of them but refused to accept it from one. When they asked him why he refused their companion's oath, he replied, "Verily, he is wearing an amulet" The man who was wearing the amulet put his hand in his cloak, pulled the amulet off and broke it then made the oath. The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi was sallam) then said, "Whoever wears an amulet has committed Shirk." (Ahmad)
