as-salaamu 'alaykum -

The shaykh, may Allaah reward him, almost an entire year ago, requested that the Salafees exemplify the da'wah of Salafiyyah by placing their real names on their posts on message boards and forums on the internet.  He mentioned a great number of benefits available to us if we do that, from them:

quote:

"11 - We will nobly remove ourselves from the ways of the biased partisans and people of secret movements and organizations, and we will oppose their stealth and hiding behind nicknames or kunyahs when their attributes and poisons become known.

12 - We will spread clarity and mutual truthfulness, two attributes that are from the foremost attributes of the Salafee manhaj."

See:  http://www.bakkah.net/articles/identities.htm

So do we want to spread clarity and mutual truthfulness?

Or do we want to follow the ways of the biased partisans and people of secret movements and organizations?

The answer should be crystal clear, and thus what we need to do should also be just as clear.

I just wanted to re-emphasize the importance of the shaykh's request, after reflecting over how common it is for Muslims to use the internet and read and accept and actually ACT ON the reports of anonymous screen names.

I ask Allaah to bring us the goodness of a time when the people return to the USOOL of the Salaf of interacting with reports!

I ask Allaah to return us to the good way of the Salaf, the way of verifying chains and KNOWING the narrators!

I ask Allaah to return us back to the way of the SALAF, that the report of a MAJHOOL (unknown person) is not accepted, nor IS IT EVEN GIVEN ANY I'TIBAAR (any weight at all, meaning it can not be strengthened nor can it strengthen other reports)!

*** CORRECTION: To say that the report of a majhool is not given any weight, that it can not be strengthened nor can it strengthen other reports is not correct.  In actuality, it can be strengthened, and it can be used to strengthen other reports, both the majhool al-'ayn and the majhool al-haal.  However, its origin is mardood (rejected) until there comes a witness for it.  So this does not take away from the point of discussion, that the report of an unknown narrator is not accepted, but I wanted to clarify this mistake.

Al-haafith Ibn Katheer said, "And as for the mubham who is unnamed, or the one who is named but not known who he actually is, then in this case he is from those whose narrations are not accepted by anyone we know of.  (Ikhtisaar Uloom Al-Hadeeth, see Al-Baa'ith Al-Hatheeth, 1/293, al-Ma'aarif, 1417) ***

I ask Allaah to help us put the knowledge of mustalahaat into practice into our lives, and to give us patience on that!

I say that after reflecting over how 'ulamaa' can be slandered on line by a majhool, and then another majhool comes and says, "Wow I didn't know he was like that!" and then another one and another.  I ask Allaah to rid us of this evil and to make us from the possessors of honor that are examples of how to interact with heresay.

*** Perhaps it would be beneficial here to differentiate between a majhool and a mubham:

Majhool: a narrator who is named in the chain, however he is not known to the scholars of hadeeth

Mubham: a narrator who is mentioned in the chain in an anonymous way, like "a thiqah told me," or "a man from Banee Salamah told me," and the likes. ***

So this is a plea to my salafee brothers, those that intend good, those that have made a personal ijtihaad to use a screen name to either mention something beneficial that they could not mention under their real names, or some other reason(s) prevent them from naming themselves,,,

Akhee As-Salafee:  After reflecting over Shaykh 'Ubayd's advice, after reflecting over the atmosphere we live in where reports of unnamed narrators are quite normal and accepted, and how this leads to the harm of the salafee da'wah...

Don't you want the reward of helping to turn people back to the clarity the Salaf lived?  Don't you want to help Salafiyyah be shown in its clear, pure form?!

Akhee, by being an example and placing your real name on the bottom of your posts, our Shaykh, Shaykh 'Ubayd Al-Jaabiree, said that this "will allow the Salafee manhaj to be seen in its beautiful form and complete shape, by way of knowing the narrators and their situations and personalities."

When you use a screen name that you are not known by, akhee As-Salafee, what do you want?!  Ask yourself this question...

By your action, are you teaching people that the report of the unnamed/unknown person is acceptable or given any weight whatsoever?

*** Refer back to the first correction in red. ***

May Allaah grant us all the ability to see the seriousness of this question!

Akhee As-Salafee - By your own example, are you teaching people, people who are trying to learn about Salafiyyah, that we are supposed to accept the report of an unnamed narrator?

If not, then why are you posting anonymously?  Are you trying to create a middle ground between the manhaj of the Salaf in accepting/rejecting reports and the atmosphere we live in?!

So you have something to say, and you may be harmed somehow if you say it publicly under your real name.  Ok, this is a real situation.  And if you used a false name to refer people to an actual page number of a book or a URL or something, then you have fulfilled your purpose.  However, by saying something from yourself, stating that you saw fulaan and heard him say such and such or saw him do such and such, you are entering into another field.  You are promoting the acceptance of the report of the majhool, since you have made the report center around your testimony.  So if you can not post under your real name out of fear, then you are excused, may Allaah reward you for your desire and patience.

As Salafees, let us exemplify the clarity of Salafiyyah!  Let us shun this unfortunate habit that helps to perpetuate an atmosphere of unconfirmable reports and confusion that exists on the internet.  Let this message board be an example of "nobly removing ourselves from the ways of the biased partisans and people of secret movements and organizations, and we will oppose their stealth and hiding behind nicknames or kunyahs when their attributes and poisons become known... We will spread clarity and mutual truthfulness, two attributes that are from the foremost attributes of the Salafee manhaj."

Oh Allaah, make us from those our shaykh has described!  Oh Allaah, let us see the goodness in this advice from our shaykh.

Let us help to create the correct atmosphere, that when an unknown person speaks out, making claims for or against people, putting forth his testimony, that the Muslims upon their Deen turn away from this falsehood and he never finds an ear to spread slander to, and thus dies in his frustration.  Unfortunately, unknown people are becoming celebrities on line, wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaah!

I am referring to the Muslims in general, as is seen quite obviously on their message boards and forums.  Look to them and see how many of them are real people.  And look how a miskeen person can start a message board with a few of his friends, each of them having 5 screen names, and begin topics of discussion, even replying to their own posts with different names!

I am not referring to Salafitalk with what I have described above, but I firmly believe that, if there are any Muslims who are going to join their efforts in helping to bring back an atmosphere of 100% clarity, where a person's words are given weight according to his level of knowledge, and people are kept in their places, then it will be Salafitalk, may Allaah increase it in goodness.

*** May Allaah reward the great number of Salafitalk members that post under their real names.  May Allaah make them all from those the shaykh has descibed.  A simple glance at other message boards will show clearly how the majority of all forum members use screen names and do not clarify their real names when posting or in their Member ID. ***

quote:

"Mas-lahah, Mas-lahah!"

The mas-lahah (benefit) is not in hiding behind screen names, the mas-lahah is found in heeding the advice of our senior scholars, the mas-lahah is found in going back to the clarity of our Salaf and taking their way in all our affairs.  May Allaah make me and all of us foremost in this, fa inna rabanaa samee'ud-Du'aa'!

And lastly, this advice of mine is offered based on my love for this message board and its members and visitors.  May Allaah place us all together in His Shade, on the Day when there will be no shade except His.
