The sermon of need was the reason for the companion Dimaad Al Azdi to enter into Islam
The following is a summary translation
http://otiby.net/makalat/articles.php?id=264

Sheikh Utabi explains

Narrated from Abdullah ibn Abbas, he said, Verily Dimaad came to Mecca and he was from Azd Shanooa.
He used to recite upon those who were insane or touched by the jinn, and so he heard from the foolish of Mecca that Muhammad, peace and blessings are upon him, was insane.

So he (Dimaad) said, if I were to see this man then perhaps Allah would cure him by way of me.
He (Dimaad) said, therefore I met him and I said, oh Muhammad I cure those who are insane or have been touched by the jinn and Allah cures by way of me whomever He wills, so do you need for me to read upon you?

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessing are upon him said, Verily all of the praises belong to Allah, we praise Him and we seek His assistance and we seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and from the evil of our actions. Whoever Allah guides then there is no one to misguide him, and whoever is misguided there is no one to lead him to the straight path, and I bear witness that nothing has the right to be worshipped except for Allah alone without partners and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger, as to what follows.

He (Dimaad) said, repeat those words to me. So the Messenger of Allah repeated the sermon of need to him three times.

Dimaad said, verily I have heard the words of the fortune tellers and the words of the magicians and the words of the poets but I have not heard anything like these words, and we have reached the middle of the sea.

Dimaad said, give me your hand and I will give you the pledge upon Islam. So he gave him his hand and he gave him the pledge. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings are upon him, said and for your people. Dimaad said and for my people.

The Messenger of Allah peace and blessings are upon him, sent out a military troop and they passed by the people of Dimaad, so the leader of the group said to the army, did any of you take anything from them? A man from them said, I took a vessel used for purification from them, the leader said, return it to them because they are the people of Dimaad.

Asalaamu'Alaykum wa Rahmatullaah.

What is the purpose of Khutbah Ul Hajah? Is it just recited for Jumm'a Khutbahs? Also is it permissible to recite it after Salah?

Jazak'Allaah Khair.

We come together for the sake of Allah and depart for the sake of Allah....
