RIYADH: Adviser to the Royal Court Sheikh Abdul Mohsen Bin Nasser Al-Obeikan has said that "belonging to the so-called Al-Qaeda terrorist organization" is "haram", or prohibited in Islam.

Speaking to Okaz by telephone, Sheikh Al-Obeikan said that anyone who belonged to the organization belonged to "a group that has left the people of truth and taken up takfeeri thought" and that "affiliation to the Al-Qaeda organization is haram".

Al-Obeikan called on Saudi members of Al-Qaeda in Yemen to return to the Kingdom and hand themselves in to the authorities.

"The people of the Sunnah and Consensus have ruled that one must hear and obey and not come out against the leaders, or create strife, or legitimize the shedding of the blood of Muslims or the protected without any right to do so" the Sheikh said.

Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior of Saudi Arabia Prince Naif condemned Al-Qaeda militants on Tuesday for killing innocent people the world over. "They opened fronts against the Muslim Ummah, weakening its capabilities and supporting its enemies," he said while addressing a meeting of Arab interior ministers.

Scholar warns against Al-Qaedaýs recruitment of youth via Internet

By MD HUMAIDAN | ARAB NEWS

Published: Jan 15, 2011 01:37 Updated: Jan 15, 2011 01:37

JEDDAH: Muhammad Al-Nijaimi, a prominent Saudi scholar, has warned against Al-Qaedaýs new designs on recruiting youths through the Internet and asked parents, imams of mosques and schools to be vigilant.

Al-Nijaimi urged imams all over the Kingdom to dedicate their sermons once or twice a month to the potential danger posed by suspicious websites belonging to Al-Qaeda.

Al-Nijaimi is chairman of civil studies at King Fahd Security College, a lecturer at the Supreme Judicial Institute and member of the committee of scholars who advise former militants at the Prince Muhammad bin Naif Center for Religious Advice.

ýThe Internet has become a tool for recruiting youths to Al-Qaeda,ý he said, citing a recent study by top security official Col. Faiz Al-Shihri claiming the militant group was now doing about 99 percent of its work online.

ýFriday prayer sermons should remind people of the new Al-Qaeda trend and be used to spread awareness among parents to monitor what their children browse on the Internet.ý

Al-Nijaimi also asked the Ministries of Education, Islamic Affairs and Interior to introduce an online program to foil Al-Qaeda plots. ýWe cannot stop the young from using the Internet. Even teaching is being done through the computer,ý he said.

Al-Nijaimi asked parents to sit with their children and check what websites they usually visit. He also asked schools to organize awareness workshops for both parents and students.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Social Affairs denied recent press reports that Al-Qaeda has managed to successfully penetrate orphanages.

ýOur orphan sons and daughters are safe and secure against deviant thoughts,ý said ministry spokesman Muhammad ibn Ibrahim Al-Awad. He said the ministry is implementing daily programs aimed at providing a proper upbringing for young orphans living in its shelter homes.

Dar Al-Ifta denies backing Al-Qaeda

JEDDAH: The Permanent Committee for Research and Religious Edicts (Dar Al-Ifta) on Wednesday denied a press report that it had supported Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda.

ýThis is a totally false report,ý said Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh, grand mufti and chairman of Dar Al-Ifta.

Al-Asheikh said Dar Al-Ifta did not author a religious edict (fatwa) supporting Bin Laden and his activities.

He said those who circulated on the Internet the false fatwa misusing the names and signatures of Dar Al-Iftaýs members would face the wrath and punishment of God. ýMaking false statement and attributing it to a person is a big crime and deserves punishment on the basis of Shariah regulations,ý the mufti said.

He quoted a Qurýanic verse saying those who make such falsifications would also face punishment in the Hereafter. He highlighted the important role and position of Islamic scholars in society. He described the act of attributing false statement to Islamic scholars as a heinous crime.

ýWhat has been mentioned in the fatwa is a total lie as it goes against the previous statements and fatwas made by Dar Al-Ifta,ý Al-Asheikh said in a statement that was carried by the Saudi Press Agency.

Dar Al-Ifta members and other prominent Islamic scholars in the Kingdom have declared several times that Osama Bin Ladin and Al-Qaeda are on the wrong path because of their horrendous crimes. Al-Qaedaýs terrorist operations have resulted in the killing of thousands of innocent people all over the world.

ýTheir words and actions have caused destruction for Islam and Muslims. Every sane person can easily understand that they are following a deviant path and that no Muslim should join Al-Qaeda or approve its activities,ý Al-Asheikh said. The grand mufti considered making falsified comments about Islamic scholars as a serious issue having dangerous consequences.

ýIt should not be taken lightly because such statements will have a great impact on Muslim individuals and groups,ý he added.

He said Dar Al-Ifta issued this clarification in order to protect the faithful from falling into the trap of Al-Qaeda's lies. All Dar Al-Ifta Committee members have signed the statement.

Last April, Dar Al-Ifta issued a statement defining what is terrorism and incriminating all Al-Qaeda terrorist operations including those carried out inside Saudi Arabia and the 9/11 attacks inside the United States. It condemned terror funding and considered those who finance terrorist operations to be as guilty as those who commit terrorist acts.
